Outreach

The African Studies Center’s Outreach program serves K-12 teachers and students, post-secondary institutions, businesses, media outlets, community, non-profit, and religious groups and organizations, government and military institutions and the general public regionally and nationally. Our K-12 teacher training activities are routinely organized in collaboration with other organizations within University of Pennsylvania, such as the Middle East Center, South Asia Center, Center for East Asia Studies, Penn Museum, and Graduate School of Education. We also work with local organizations, such as the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia, Global Education Motivators (GEM), Philadelphia Youth Network, International House, Coalition of African Communities (AFRICOM), Mayor’s Commission for African & Caribbean Immigrant Affairs, Philadelphia Federation of Teachers Health and Welfare Fund, BigPicture Small World, FREE Library and more.

Our Speakers Bureau brings faculty, graduate students, and the Assistant Director into regional classrooms to present on African topics. We organize events and educational programs for a variety of audiences. These outreach activities offer valuable insight into the cultures, languages, arts, literatures, religions, politics, history, and contemporary issues of African countries. Many of our resources are available to the public for free or for a minimal cost.
