(1) “One Book, One
Philadelphia”
Saturday,
January 12th 10:00AM 3:00PM, Houston Hall, Hall of Flags
Learn
methods for teaching the 2008 One Book, One Philadelphia selections. Additionally,
local Sudanese leaders and activists will offer a training that will build awareness
about the conflicts in Southern Sudan and Darfur. Co-sponsored by the FREE Library
and Middle East Center.
(2) “Building
Background Knowledge: The Current Conflict in Congo”
Tuesday,
January 22nd 5:00-7:00PM , Williams Hall, 255 S. 36th St., Rm 639
In
this workshop, participants will be introduced to a cooperative, versatile protocol
that can be implemented on virtually any grade level with small modifications.
Workshop attendees will participate in the protocol using the current conflict
in Democratic Republic of Congo as the topic.
(3) “Black
History Month Teachings must begin with Africa”
Thursday,

Participants
will receive sample lesson plans for incorporating Africa into the month of February
and all year long.
(4) “Ethiopia
and Eritrea”
Thursday

Ethiopia
is a country situated in the Horn of Africa that has been landlocked since the
independence of its northern neighbor Eritrea in 1993. This area has yielded some
of the oldest traces of humanity, making it an important area for study.
(5) “Music from South Africa to Philadelphia”
