UNITED NATIONS  DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME Emergencies Unit for Ethiopia

INTRODUCTION:

The deteriorating conditions in the above-mentioned areas has forced the relief agencies to adjust their operations to the current situation.

Listed below are the agencies working in the affected areas along with detailed information regarding locations, number of beneficiaries, ration size and where possible the stock and pipeline situation. Where available, for comparison the estimated number of beneficiaries from the original RRC December appeal are listed in brackets ( ).
 

1. GONDAR

1.1. Ethiopian Relief Organization (ERO)

Ongoing relief distributions:
Belessa woreda: 70,000 Beneficiaries (70,000)
Ibnat woreda: 35,000 " (59,000)
Ration size: 13.5 kg of wheat grain, 1.5 kg of pulses
0.6 kg of oil

The relief distributions are partially linked to FFW programme (upgrading of Ibnat - Belessa road).

Other activities: A rehabilitation project for returnees from Sudan starts in March. Details are not yet available.
 

1.2. Food for the Hungry International (FHI)

Ongoing relief distributions:

JRP's general plan for 1994 was for 150,000 beneficiaries.

In North and South Gondar the JRP operation is managed and implemented by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

G. NORTH WOLLO
 

2.1. CONCERN

Planned relief distributions:

Korobo Meda 11,000 Beneficiaries
Tukulesh 12,500 "
Delanta woreda 15,000 "
Ration size: 15.0 kg of maize
A reassessment with RRC is underway before distributions will start.
 

2.2. International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

Planned relief distributions:

Sekota woreda: 49,000 Beneficiaries (49,000)
Sequala woreda: 20,000 " (35,000)
Ration size: 12.0 kg of wheat grain, 3.0 kg of beans and
1.0 kg of oil

Distributions are planned to start in Sekota on March 15.

Concerning Sequala the administration is currently improving the road from Sekota to Sequala (60 Km). If the conditions allow it IFRC will wait with the distributions until the road is finished, so the Sequala population can get their rations in their woreda.
 

2.3. Joint Relief Project (JRP)

Relief distributions:
Hamusit (Sekota) 15,000 Beneficiaries
Dahana woreda 30,000 " (30,000)
Gidan woreda 30,000 " (30,000)
Bugna woreda 30,000 " (30,000)
Meket woreda 10,000 " (10,000)

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is implementing the JRP operation in the above-mentioned locations.
Kobo woreda 100,000 Beneficiaries(100,000)

The Ethiopian Catholic Secretariat is implementing the JRP operation in Kobo woreda (3 distribution points).
Habro woreda 10,000 Beneficiaries

The Ethiopian Evangelical Church of Mekane Yesus (EECMY) is implementing the JRP operation in Habro
woreda (2 distribution points).

Ration size: 12.5 kg of wheat grain, 0.9 kg of oil and 1.0 kg of supplementary food.
Duration of the operation: February to November
 

3. TIGRAY

3.1. International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

Planned relief distributions:
Adi Gudom woreda: 16,000 Beneficiaries
Wejerat woreda: 22,000 " (20,000)
Hintalo woreda: 17,000 " (17,000)
Ration size: 12.0 kg of wheat, 3.0 kg of beans and
1.0 kg of oil

Distributions will start in Adi Gudom around March 21.

3.2. Joint Relief Project (JRP)

Ongoing relief distributions for Southern Zone:
 

3.3. Relief Society of Tigray (REST)

REST is covering the relief distributions in most of the Central, Eastern and Western zones of Region 1.

Arrival of 10,000 MT of sorghum is expected at the end of March/April
Arrival of 10,000 MT of wheat-grain and/or sorghum is expected for June.

The 3rd phase of the internal purchase programme of SCF UK of 1,500 MT of cereals for the Central zone will be executed in the coming two weeks.

Pipeline for internal purchase programme:  Funds from SOH (Dutch Interchurch Aid) are expected for the purchase of 1,500 MT of cereals and 120 MT of oil.
 

3.4. World Vision International (WVI)

Planned relief distributions linked with FFW programme:

Atsbi woreda: 35,000 Beneficiaries (35,000)
Womberta woreda: 35,000 " (30,000)
Details are not yet available.
 

4. Stocks and Pipeline

Generally, all the implementing agencies have low stocks or nothing at all.

Detailed information concerning stocks and pipeline was available from ERO and JRP:

ERO: 2,500 MT are currently being distributed (from German Agro Action)

1,800 MT of sorghum, 216 MT of chick peas, 90 MT of rape-seed oil are in stock for coming distributions
(from EEC)

Negotiations with German Agro Action for additional donations in view of the increased number of bene-
ficiaries are currently underway.
 

JRP: The March distributions are covered with the food that should have arrived for February. Food supplies are on
the spot in most distribution centers.

The pipeline is nil.

Confirmed pledges: 30,700 MT from EEC (no ETA)
Secured funds for purchase of 6,000 MT of grain from CARITAS Germany

Not yet confirmed: Request for 52,100 MT from USAID.
