The African Studies Center will award, pending federal funding by the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI, FLAS Fellowships for AY 2010-11 to some undergraduate and graduate students planning to pursue African language study at the intermediate or higher level.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, be admitted to or enrolled full time in an undergraduate or graduate program at Penn, and have research or career plans that require the use of an African language. The languages most commonly studied are Amharic, Igbo, Swahili, Tigrinya, Twi, Wolof, Yoruba, and Zulu, but other languages may be approved.
Successful applicants must enroll both semesters of the FLAS Fellowship year in an intermediate or higher African language and in full-time study in either African Studies or professional studies related to Africa. Graduate student FLAS Fellows will receive $18,000 toward tuition and a $15,000 stipend; undergraduate FLAS Fellows will receive $10,000 toward tuition and a $5,000 stipend.
Applications must be received by September 15, 2010. The application form lists the materials required for submission which include:
- a transcript of your Univ. of Pennsylvania work, at undergraduate or graduate level as appropriate
- a curriculum vitae
- two letters of recommendation from faculty members who know your work
- a one-page essay describing why the study of an African language is essential to realizing your study or career goals
The competition will be conducted strictly in accordance with University policies and the selection guidelines of the U.S. Department of Education. Awards are made competitively by the Executive Committee of the African Studies Center (ASC). ASC seeks to support students in as wide a variety of disciplines and professions, and from as wide a variety of backgrounds, as possible.
