Ethiopic Viewer for X-Windows

Greetings All,

A file viewer is now available for reading Ethiopic script on work- stations with X-Windows. The file viewer translates documents written with Latin script (as per the system presented in the "ETHIOPIC IN ASCII" posting) into graphic Ethiopic. Multicolored Ethiopic with mixed Latin writing features are available. In addition to the traditional fidel, characters are provided for Tigrinia, Chaha, and Orominia, all Ethiopic punctuation is inclued as well. A fidel font editor also comes with the Eth-View package. The article below comes from page 80 of the March '94 Ethiopian Review. The article was chosen as an example text for its brevity and not its content. The text was retyped in Ethiopic with an experimental version of Yitna Firdyiwek's Word Perfect add on, Goha, that works with the same entry system as the Ethiopic Viewer. The experimental Goha (not available) then translated the Ethiopic into Ascii where it could be imported from PC to a Unix workstation and read without modification by Eth-View. Likewise articles composed for Eth-View may be exported to DOS to be read back in Ethiopic with Goha (which may be available some time later). The article may also be read without ambiguity directly in it's transfer medium, ascii. Hence this posting is a demonstration of the fidel representation system's (see Ethio Science and Technology Vol. 3 No. 1) versatility for intercomputer communication and functional indepence from fidel addressing schemes. When successfully installed Eth-View will display the article faithfully as it appeared in Ethiopian Review with some additional formatting added for demonstrative purposes. Spelling errors may also be present.
