Faculty Publications

MSU African Studies Center Core faculty members, Folu F. Ogundimu and Okechukwu C. Iheduru are co-authors of "Developments in Transportation and Communications" (Chapter 8) of the volume entitled: Afro-Optimism: Perspectives on Africa's Advances. 2003. Edited by Ebere Onwudiwe and Minabere Ibelema (Wesport, CT: Praeger).


Margo Glew and David Dwyer wrote an article for The Journal of African Language Teachers Association (JALTA) entitled: "The African Language Tutorial Guide: A Resource Manual for Use in African Language Tutorial-Based Classes," Volume IV, No.1, 2001. ALO 2003 Special Request for Applications: Institutional Partnerships in Higher Education for International Development The Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development (ALO) is pleased to announce the release of a 2003 Special Request for Applications: Institutional Partnerships in Higher Education for International Development. The RFA may be downloaded from ALO's website: http://www.aascu.org/ALO/RFPs/RFPMain.htm

ALO in cooperation with USAID is issuing this call for applications for higher education partnerships that focus on one of the following six areas of strategic interest: (1) higher education leadership and administrative transformation; (2) workforce development and community colleges; (3) agriculture and environment; (4) management of private and public sector institutions in countries severely affected by HIV/AIDS; (5) improving the quality of teacher training colleges and institutions; (6) MBA programs and private sector development; and (7) ALO and USAID also invite applications for higher education partnerships that address other critical development needs targeted towards the strategic objectives of USAID missions or that reflect emerging policy and technical solutions to development problems. ALO plans to conduct a peer- reviewed competition to make eighteen (18) awards of up to $100,000 each to implement cooperative partnerships over a two-year period.

CONFERENCES

The Africa Faith and Justice Network (AFJN) will host a conference to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The conference's theme is "SANKOFA" Looking Back, Moving Forward. The Akan word Sankofa literally means "return and pick it up." AFJN's anniversary this year will be in the spirit of "sankofa," advancing its mission of working for just US policies toward Africa, while staying rooted in the ideals and spirit of its original vision to advocate for human rights, peace and economic justice.

The conference will take place at the Dominican Retreat House, 7103 Old Dominion Drive, McLean, Virginia, from October 10-12, 2003. On Friday, October 10, there will be registration followed by a keynote address A Personal Experience of Faith and Justice in Liberia Archbishop Michael Kpakala Francis. Assistant Professor - Indiana Univ., Bloomington The Department of Political Science at Indiana University, Bloomington, intends to make a tenure-track assistant professor appointment in either comparative or international politics with research interests in Africa. Candidates should demonstrate broad theoretical interests, active research agendas with the promise for publication in high-quality venues, good teaching credentials, and proficiency in appropriate research methods. In addition to maintaining an ongoing research program, the holder of theposition is expected to teach courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, and to participate in Indiana University's African Studies Program. Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) Telecom Training Institute - Utako, Abuja The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) recognizes the need for human resources capacity development, and specifically for highly trained personnel in telecommunications and other related aspects of the rapidly growing ICT industry in Nigeria and the rest of Africa. Accordingly it is in the process of establishing an Ultra Modern training facility at its own existing building in Utako, Abuja. The Institute will be operational by January of 2004.

The NCC is seeking qualified candidates for the following five (5) positions in the NCC Telecommunications Training Institute:

- Director - Manager, Business Development and Marketing - Manager, Education and Curriculum Development - Manager, Administration and Finance - Manager, Multimedia, Technology, and Engineering
