Scholars: AboutThe Scholar for a Day is a day-long seminar, organized by Penn graduate students of all disciplines, designed to provide students and faculty with exposure to a leading scholar in African Studies. Francis Deng is Research Professor of International Law, Politics and Society and the Director of the Center for Displacement Studies at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. A former Sudanese minister of state, ambassador and, currently, special representative of the UN Secretary-General on internally displaced persons, Professor Deng is a leading expert on the Sudan, African conflicts, and refugees.
