CONFERENCES & CALLS FOR PAPERS
CALL FOR PAPERS: AFRICAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALASIA
& THE PACIFIC 27TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE, "African
Renewal, African Renaissance': New Perspectives on Africa's
Past and Africa's Present" (November 26-28, 2004) in Perth
This is the second call for papers and participation in the 27th
annual conference of the African Studies Association of Australasia
and the Pacific (AFSAAP), to be held at the University of Western
Australia (UWA), Perth, Australia from 26-28 November 2004. The aim
of the conference is to facilitate discussion on a wide range of
subjects relating to the study of Africa and the organizers invite
proposals for papers on any aspect of Africa, as well as on
comparative approaches. While the overall conference theme is broad,
there is ample room for specialized contributions and papers
reflecting the different disciplines and wide-ranging interests of
academics, professionals, and postgraduates, as well as the wider
diplomatic, government, aid/NGO, media, cultural, labour/business,
and African communities. For more information, contact

RESEARCH WEEKEND: WHAT HISTORY FOR WHICH ZIMBABWE?
(June 12-13, 2004), St Antony's College, Oxford
The Annual BZS Research Day this year is a FULL WEEKEND!
As usual, there will be researchers on Zimbabwe from across
the world, including a significant number from UZ. However,
there will be a slight departure from our usual practice,
as the papers will be broad survey papers, rather than work
in progress. For background to this year's Research Days
theme, see Terence Ranger's article examining the role of
history in political discourse in Zimbabwe:
'Nationalist Historiography, Patriotic History and the
History of the Nation: the struggle over the past in
Zimbabwe'. It is available on the BZS website:
http://www.britain-zimbabwe.org.uk/ZimbHistoriogrqphy.htm,
and in the forthcoming isse of JSAS. Organizers will be collating
short reports of current research on Zimbabwe for the directory,
available in hard copy at the conference and online at
http://www.britain-zimbabwe.org.uk/ResearchRegister03.htm
Please contact Diana.Jeater@uwe.ac.uk if you would
like to include details of your research in the directory.
CALL FOR PAPERS: THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MISSIONARY LINGUISTICS
(March 12-15, 2005) in Hong Kong
The Third International Conference on Missionary Linguistics concentrates
on early-modern descriptions of non-Indo-European languages. European
expansion, colonisation and christianisation was accompanied by the study
and recording of the native languages. After the discovery of the New World
the Europeans began to establish their hegemony in a new continent. European
expansion, colonisation and christianization of a large number and variety
of Amerindian tribes was accompanied by the study and recording of the native
languages of the Americas. In the same period, Christian missionary activities
escalated in Asia, especially the Far East, and in Russia, and a little later
in Africa. In the early 19th century, the Pacific became a new "America" for
missionary linguistics. This congress aims to outline the state of research
done in the field. The subjects are to some extent limited in time (focusing
primarily on the period 1492-1850) but not in space. This conference aims
particularly at inter-relating grammars written in different languages (Latin,
Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, Dutch, etc.), by missionaries of
different orders (Dominicans, Franciscans, Jesuits, etc.), and in different
continents. We wish to 'globalise' the discipline, crossing national and
linguistic frontiers in order to create new views and to open new horizons.

CALL FOR PAPERS: DEFINING SECURITY IN AN INSECURE WORLD: RADICALISM,
TERRORISM, AND STATE RESPONSES (mARCH 3-5, 2005)
The History Department of West Virginia University announces the call for
papers for its bi-annual Rush Holt History Conference, which will take place
March 3-5, 2005. The topic is "Defining Security in an Insecure World:
Radicalism, Terrorism, and State Responses." Conference organizers invite
papers dealing with events, people, and movements that have threatened
societies and states. Papers from a broad spectrum of historical areas,
both geographical and thematic, will be considered: for example, United States,
Europe, Middle East; labor, diplomatic, and military. It is the goal of this
conference to shed light on and give historical context to the current climate
of insecurity and radicalism in the world. It is not intended as a conference
particularly about September 11th, although September 11th-related panels
and papers are welcome. Please submit an abstract and c.v. via email or
postal service by September 1, 2004 to K. Antolini (antolini01@aol.com).

CALL FOR PAPERS: ACROSS FRONTIERS BEYOND BORDERS: TRANSATLANTIC
HISTORY 1400-2004 (September 30th, 2004)
The History Department of the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and
the Transatlantic History Student Organization (THSO) are sponsoring the
Fifth Annual Graduate Student Workshop on Transatlantic History. Since
1999 this workshop has provided a venue to discuss the comparative and
transnational/ transcultural character of the interrelations and
interactions between and among the peoples of the Atlantic World. From
Africa's shores to the American West, from South America's rainforests
to the European Bosporus, the Atlantic World has been the site of social,
cultural, economic and political encounters that have transformed people
and places. The purpose of UTA's interdisciplinary workshop is to bring
together graduate students to explore the transatlantic interrelations and
interchanges over the last five centuries. Graduate students from history
and other disciplines are invited to submit a 300-word abstract and
abbreviated curriculum vitae by May 31, 2004. Authors of papers accepted
for a 20-minute presentation will be notified by June 30, 2004. A limited

CALL FOR PAPERS: CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES ON ACCOUNTING JOURNAL,
SPECIAL ISSUE ON "CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES ON EUROPEAN AND AFRICAN
STUDIES"
Critical research draws on a tradition of scholarship that
depends on its openness to fresh perspectives and experience
for its continuous re-invigoration. This special issue
invites contributions that are inspired by African and
European historicity, culture, and erudition. Contributors
are invited to interpret this call for papers broadly; to
draw on the diversity of their own historical and
contemporary experiences in order to present us with their
own unique formulation of "critical". For instance, given
the tumultuous events of the recent past, we would be
especially interested in research that speaks to extant
colonial and imperialist aggression, as experienced by both
the colonizer and the colonized, in both colonial and
post-colonial eras. We would welcome submissions addressing
this, or any other critical field of choice.
Potential contributors are invited to contact Professor Sy
to discuss their ideas and work. Four copies (and a disk
copy) of submissions should be in Word format, include name,
address, email, telephone and FAX numbers of all authors
(designating the corresponding author), and be mailed to
Professor Sy at: Baruch College at the City University of
New York, Box 12:236, Accountancy Department, One Baruch
Way, New York, NY10010-5585, USA (Aida_Sy@baruch.cuny.edu)

CALL FOR PAPERS: 2ND INTERNATIONAL 'LANGUAGE-COMMUNICATION
CULTURE' CONFERENCE (November 24-27, 2004) in Beja, Portugal,
The theme of this conference is "Knowledge and Power: History,
Geography, Representation, Identity in Post-Colonial Studies."
In Orientalism, Edward Said selected these two great Baconian themes -
Knowledge and Power - as dominant in the discourse of imperial authority.
And, in Culture and Imperialism, he called for 'a different and innovative
paradigm for humanistic research', 'a way of regarding our world as
amenable to investigation and interrogation without magic keys, special
jargons and instruments, curtained-off practices.' Both in method
and content Said's books contributed to a new approach to post-colonial
theory and practice. A year after his death we would like to address some
of the issues he developed in his work. Papers on the following subjects are
welcome: 1) Histories of Empires and Colonies; Women and Empires; Old
Empires and Indirect Colonialism; Post-colonial Theories in the 21st century;
Said's works and their importance in post-colonial cultural criticism. Please
send 150-word abstracts by July 15, 2004 to the following addresses:
Adelaide Meira Serras (aserras@mail.telepac.pt), Luí Leal de Faria
(lealfaria@yahoo.com) or Teresa Malafaia (tvmalafaia@mail.telepac.pt)
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: DEMOCRACY AND DEVELOPMENT: JOURNAL
OF WEST AFRICAN AFFAIRS (SPECIAL ISSUE, VOL.5, NO.1, 2004),
THEME: RELIGION, POLITICS AND SOCIETY IN CONTEMPORARY WEST AFRICA
The post 9/11 'surveillance' on religious fundamentalism has coincided with a
renewed resurgence of the religious imagination in many West African
countries, leaving the spontaneous challenge of how to maintain a balance
between doctrinal rigor and political extremism. At the same time, religion
has continued to impact on transitioning West African societies in many ways.
In these societies, the influence of religion can be observed across many
social geographies- in higher institutions, corporate organizations, official
institutions; in short, every social interstice where religion is theoretically
expected to be 'noticed' by its absence. This process, what we might call the
enchantment of the public realm, has had profound consequences for traditional
divisions between the public and the private spheres.
We invite contributions from across disciplines and methodologies which
balance the theoretical and the empirical, rethinking these issues in
innovative and challenging ways. Authors are encouraged to pay special
attention to the ways in which new religious movements question the legitimacy
of the state, the role of alienated youth in the formation of these movements,
the surge of fundamentalisms across the sub-region, and how ordinary people
are using religion to re-negotiate the existing terms of citizenship, engage
with or subvert the state. Papers are due by July 30, 2004. For more
information: http://www.cdd.org.uk

FELLOWSHIPS FOR THREATENED SCHOLARS
The Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund provides
fellowships for scholars whose lives and work are threatened in their home
countries. These fellowships permit scholars to find temporary refuge at
universities and colleges anywhere in the world, enabling them to pursue
their academic work and to continue to share their knowledge with
students, colleagues, and the community at large. When conditions improve,
these scholars will return home to help rebuild universities and societies
ravaged by fear, conflict and repression. Academics, researchers and
independent scholars from any country, field or discipline may qualify.
Preference is given to scholars with a Ph.D. or other highest degree in their
field; who have been employed in scholarly activities at a university, college
or other institution of higherlearning during the last four years (excluding
displacement or prohibition); who demonstrate superior academic accomplishment
or promise; and whose selection is likely to benefit the academic community
in the home and/or host country or region. Applications from female scholars
and under-represented groups are strongly encouraged. Universities, colleges
and research centers in any country may apply to serve as hosts. Applications
and nominations should be made to the Fund's Selection Committee. Institutions
interested in hosting a particular scholar should submit a letter with the
scholar's application. Fellowships are awarded to institutions for support of
specific individuals, to be matched in most cases by the institution or third-
party. Fellowship recipients are expected to continue their work in safety at
the host institution-teaching, lecturing, conducting research, writing and
publishing. Fellowships from 3 months to one calendar year will be
considered with up to 25 fellowships awarded annually. The maximum award
is US $20,000. Applications are accepted at any time. Emergency applications
receive urgent consideration. For more information and to receive an
application: http://www.iie.org/SRF
