CALL FOR PAPERS: THE CRITICAL HALF (WOMEN IN DEVELOPMENT)

Women for Women International, a non-profit, humanitarian organization, seeks submissions for the second edition of its annual academic journal, The Critical Half, about economic and social issues as they relate to women in international development. This issue will focus on gender and microlending, and highlight some areas that have not been widely covered such as Islamic Banking, Shari'ah lending, and role of religion in defining lending methodology, etc., among other topics. CULTURE (March 26-28, 2004)
This conference, which will be held at the University of Texas at Austin, will be centered on the Yoruba to review the state of knowledge, the various advances already made, the connections with comparative and diaspora history, the critique of old and new sources, and the identification of new areas worthy of investigation. Papers will be welcome that raise historical, cultural, methodological, and theoretical questions that address the strengths and voids by focusing on relevant issues and empty issues and empty spaces in Yoruba history and culture, as well as its global spread in the African diaspora. CULTURAL IDENTITIES AND PERFORMANCE" (DUBOIS - NKRUMAH - DUNHAM ANNUAL CONFERENCE, April 2-3, 2004) The theme of this inaugural meeting highlights the central role of culture in the works of the founding figures in the development of the discipline of Africana Studies. Conference organizers seek contributions that explore the concept of culture in varying and transforming ways, including papers that examine the formation of cultural identities at individual, group, national and transnational levels; performance as a means of producing and reproducing cultural traditions; culture as a force for change; aesthetic production; family and kinship systems; health; economy; and religion. CALL FOR PAPERS: MEMORY AND IDENTITY IN ASIA AND AFRICA

In recent humanities research, an increasing number of interests are grouped under the common heading of memory. Inspired by this memory boom, Reiko Abe and Anne Thelle Backer (University of Oslo) plan to organize a project that will bring together various research topics which have 'memory and identity' as their focus. The Stanford Journal of International Law will host a Symposium dedicated to research on African legal developments on March 12-13, 2004 to encourage legal scholarship on this topic and provide a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue. ASSURING FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY IN AFRICA

(April 1-4, 2004) in Kampala, Uganda Food and nutrition security remain Africa's most fundamental challenge. About 200 million people on the continent are undernourished, their numbers having increased by 15 percent since the early 1990s and virtually doubling since the late 1960s. Against this alarming backdrop, however, Africa has climbed back on the agenda. There are new political initiatives gaining momentum both inside and outside the continent. This all-Africa conference will bring together the traditional and new actors and stakeholders to deliberate on how to bring about change and action to assure food and nutrition security. RUTGERS INSTITUTE FOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS, "AFRICA IN

WORLD HISTORY" (April 23, 2004)
This seminar is only open to secondary school teachers and REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. This conference will look at major issues in the history of Africa and its relationship to World History. Broad themes will be combined with in-depth study of the area of Senegambia and the Upper Guinea Coast (modern Senegal south to Sierra Leone including Mali and other interior areas). The conference will be structured so as to facilitate the integration of African history into the world history curriculum. The Global Fund for Women (GFW) aims to support women's groups that advance the human rights of women and girls. The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) is pleased to announce the launching of its prize for the best three doctoral theses produced annually in Africa. The African Studies Centre (ASC) Leiden and the Centre d'Etudes d'Afrique Noire (CEAN) Bordeaux are launching a project to study the relationship between Islam, society and the state in sub- Saharan Africa that will culminate in an international conference to be held in the Spring of 2005.
