The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA)
invites proposals from researchers for possible inclusion in its new
multinational working group (MWG) on the theme of "Africa and Its Diaspora".
The MGW is the flagship research vehicle employed by CODESRIA for the promotion
of multi-country and multidisciplinary reflections on critical questions of
concern to the African social research community. The research that will be
carried out will focus on the range of topics covering the historic and
contemporary African Diaspora, the demography and culture linkage and political
and economic linkage between Africa and its Diasporas, diasporic processes and
their interfaces with globalization, and educational and scientific flows
between Africa and its Diasporas. Proposals should not exceed 3000 words or 12
double-spaced pages, and should include a clear statement of the purpose of the
project and the problematic to be researched, a review of literature and a
description of the methodology to be used, detailed calendar of work and a

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS: ENCYLOPEDIA OF GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES ON THE UNITED STATES
Berkshire Publishing Group and CQ Press are preparing the Encyclopedia of Global
Perspectives on the United States for publication in June 2005. The encyclopedia
will explore the role and image of the United States from the viewpoints of the
peoples and nations of the world. The editor is searching for African scholars
to contribute articles on the African nations that are still unassigned. The
articles will include historical coverage as well as a contemporary analysis of
that nation's relations with the United States. The unassigned nations in Africa

The division of humanities at the University of California, LA, will appoint 4
Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows for a 2-year tenure beginning in the fall
of 2006. Fellows must have earned their degree no earlier than January 2000 and
no later that June 2006. Fellows will receive a stipend of $45,000 a year,
standard fringe benefits, a one-time moving allowance of $1,500, plus a small

The NSEP program awards scholarships to U.S citizens for study of world regions
deemed critical to U.S interests (including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern
Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Middle East. Applicants

invites applications for two fellowships for the academic year 2006-2007.
Applicants must be advanced to candidacy at an accredited university. Scholars
whose research focuses on intersections of race, class, gender or sexuality in
African, Caribbean, African-American or Diasporic Studies are encouraged to
apply. The duration of the award is 9 months, and the fellowship grant is

FELLOWSHIP: PRB DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPS IN POPULATION, REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH, AND
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
*Application deadline is February 20, 2006.
The Hewlett/PRB Dissertation Fellowship will support four two-year fellowships
starting June 2006. Students enrolled in PhD programs in United States and
Canada are eligible to apply. Students must have their dissertation proposal
in progress or completed and all course work completed by the beginning of
fellowship program. Dissertations that address population and development
issues pertinent to the African continent are especially encouraged. Fellowship
recipients are awarded $20,000 per year for two years to cover expenses incurred
while working on their dissertation, including tuition, travel for research
purposes and living expenses. To apply, send cover letter, CV, Statement of
intent to pursue a dissertation to examining the linkages of population and

Penn-in-Tanzania is a five-week program which will provide students with an
opportunity to study at the University of Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania. The
program offers a menu of courses covering topics on Tanzania and other East

GRADUATE SUMMER SEMINARS: PERFORMING AFRICAN DIASPORAS, Florida International
University, Miami, Florida (July 5-August 4, 2006)
A series of seminars (4 modules) will focus on black performativity and cultural
production from the perspective of aesthetics, poetics, and representation in
four weekly modules. The relationship between cultural production, performance,
and representation, on the one hand, and the production of black subjectivity
and cognitively inscribed popular conceptions of blackness on the other, will
be examined. Popular culture and the deployment of literary, visual, auditory,
and other forms of sensory technologies will be explored and interrogated,
historicized and framed within the practices of conjunctural and comparative
analysis. These deployments will be examined in the production and contestation
of blackness and black subjectivity; in the reinforcement and contestation of
black inferiority; in the production and contestation of racialized discourses
of difference; in the production of ideologies of racialized inferiority,
superiority, and equality; and in politics of rebellion, opposition, reversal,
transformation and reinforcement. Ambiguity, contradiction, conflict,
and opposition will be issues that form part of the examination of African
