delegation from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan

University (NMMU) from Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

During their visit, the delegation of scholars and

practitioners will explore various approaches used at

Michigan State University to support a strong learning

environment in all aspects of the students' experiences,

including the classrooms and the residence halls. Please

join us as we welcome the NMMU delegation on

Monday, November 10 and also, feel free to attend the

brown bag talk on Tuesday, November 11.

GenCen 2009 Spring & Summer Internships


The Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen)

Internship Program offers internship coordination

services and support to MSU undergraduate and

graduate students interested in issues of gender, social

justice, community development, health, domestic

violence, and/or environmental change. Students gain

hands-on experience interning with organizations

working on these issues, while receiving MSU credit.

Spring Course Announcement


NUR 402: International Health (on-line course),

3 credits, Instructor: Connie Currier.

This course will provide a general understanding of

factors/dynamics that affect the health of human

populations and efforts to improve it. The course will

address: 1) the cultural context of health and illness, 2)

international health and population status, and 3) the

role of international agencies in policy setting and

program development. The course is open to graduate

and undergraduate students, and nursing and non-

Africa Policy Journal- 2009 Edition: Africa Rising?


Call for Papers- Deadline December 12, 2008

The Harvard Africa Policy Journal (HAPJ) is the only

scholarly journal in the United States dedicated to

African policy. The Africa Policy Journal's mission is to

promote a rigorous, informed and influential policy

dialogue that is relevant to today's development of

Africa. The Editor's seek to publish thought-provoking

content which provides fresh insight into the most

significant opportunities and challenges facing African

nations today. Articles and commentaries should explore

the relationship between policymaking as it relates to the

economic, social, and political change effecting Africa

today. Book reviews should critically assess a book of

importance to the culture, politics and or development of

the African community. Authors must submit an

electronic copy of the submission online or by e-mail to:

UNESCO Young Professionals Program


UNESCO has announced the reopening of their Young

Professionals Program for people under 30 who want to

start a career in an international organization. The

deadline for applications is November 19, 2008. The

selected candidates will be recruited with a one-year

contract at the P-1 level (approximately $45,000 tax-

The Office of the Dean of International Studies and

Programs at Michigan State University (MSU) and the

U.S. Department of Education's International Education

Programs Service (IEPS) are pleased to announce a

national conference to commemorate the 50th

anniversary of Title VI funding. This conference will be

held March 19-21, 2009 in Washington, D.C. at the

Hyatt Regency Washington on Capital Hill. Additional

presentation and individual presenters will accept

Margaret McNamara Scholarship for Females


The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) was

established in 1981 to honor the late Margaret

McNamara and her commitment to the well-being of

women and children in developing countries. The

purpose of the grant is to support the education of

women from developing countries who are committed to

improving the lives of women and children in their home

countries. Previous grant recipients studied agriculture,

architecture, urban planning, civil engineering,

education, forestry, journalism, nursing, nutrition,

pediatrics, public administration, public health, social

sciences and social work. Applications can only be

submitted by accessing the website at:

http://www.mmmf-grants.org. The application deadline

is February 28, 2009.

Lecturer in Swahili - Stanford Univ.


The Language Center at Stanford University invites

applications for a full-time three-year position of

Lecturer in Swahili beginning September 1, 2009. The

position is renewable. Minimum qualifications are an

MA in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and/or African

Languages, Ph.D. preferable. Applicants should have

experience teaching Swahili language as an instructor at

the college level. Candidates should be able to teach

Swahili language courses at all levels and should

possess native or near-native fluency in Swahili with an

excellent command of English. Familiarity with

standards-based instruction and ACTFL OPI principles,

with a commitment to pursuing rater/tester certification

preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to

assume leadership of the Swahili program and take an

active role in the Center for African Studies. Salary is

competitive.

persons who can serve as recommenders, and a brief

description of teaching philosophy, should be mailed or
