African Studies Center Application for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS): 2010-2011 AY

The African Studies Center at MSU is now accepting on-line applications for FLAS fellowships for academic year 2010-2011 and for the 2010 Summer Cooperative African Language Institute (SCALI). The FLAS fellowship is funded by the U.S. Department of Education Title VI program for the study of African languages and non-language courses on Africa. 2010 Summer GenCen Internships

The Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen) internship program offers internship coordination services and support to MSU undergraduate and graduate students from any department or college. Students interested in gender issues may elect to participate in internships related to social justice, human rights, community development, reproductive health, domestic violence, and/or environmental health and justice.For more information, including an application and lists of potential local, national, and international internship opportunities, please visit their website at: http://www.gencen.msu.edu/academics/u_internships.htm.

WorldTeach Volunteer Program in Tanzania

WorldTeach, is a non-profit, non-governmental and non-sectarian organization that aims to provide educational assistance where help is needed most. WorldTeach programs provide opportunities for individuals to live and work as volunteer teachers in developing African countries such as Rwanda, Namibia, Kenya, South Africa – and, most recently, Tanzania.

WorldTeach is excited about the potential this fledgling program holds as they prepare to send their very first team into Tanzania. Although Tanzania is one of the ! most peaceful and personable countries in Africa, it's also one of the poorest, and national education has been severely hindered by a lack of resources. WorldTeach will be partnering with the Ministry of Education in Tanzania to help the country reach its Tanzania Vision 2025 policy goal: to provide a high quality of education, at all levels, to all of its citizens.

This program gives volunteers the chance to immerse themselves in Tanzanian culture by living in local teacher housing, where they will gain first-hand exposure to the region's languages, customs and foods. With WorldTeach, volunteers will not only reinforce the local education system with their much-needed efforts, but they'll also partake in a study and celebration of one of Africa's most unique and generous cultures.

The upcoming departure date for the Tanzania Year Program is in June 2010. Recent graduates or others interested in volunteering in Africa are encouraged to apply. ! The deadline is March 15, 2010. African Women in Agriculture & Development

African women working in agricultural research and development from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia who have completed a bachelor, masters or doctoral degree in selected disciplines are invited to apply. Applicants must be nationals of the above listed countries and be available in Africa throughout the fellowship period.

Graduate Student Conference - Boston Univ., CFP

The 18th Annual African Studies Graduate Student Conference will be held at Boston University on March 19 and 20, 2010. The conference is an interdisciplinary forum intended for graduate students at all levels of study. It provides an informal setting in which students can exchange ideas, share research, and expand collegial networks. In past years, participants have presented course research, dissertation proposals, thesis chapters, methodological models, and other works in progress. While there are no strict thematic guidelines, special consideration will be given to papers with multi-disciplinary application and/or cross-regional appeal. This year's theme is "Africa: Engaging the Past, Envisioning the Future." The organizers are looking for papers that! explore old issues in new ways, present positive and innovative approaches to various challenges in Africa, and create consciousness in the area of African studies.
