Tanzania
-- Refugees
The
refugee
situation
in Tanzania
has been
greatly
affected
by the political
instability
of neighboring
countries
like Uganda,
Burundi,
and Rwanda.
In early
1994, Tanzania
was host
to about
480,000
refugees
from Burundi,
50,000 from
Rwanda,
60,000 from
Mozambique,
15,000 from
Zaire, 3,000
from South
Africa,
and 1,200
from Somalia.
By late
June 1994,
at least
436,500
new refugees
had moved
into western
Tanzania
from Rwanda
because
of ethnic
conflicts
in that
country.
