General Activities

The Uganda Society works to promote and preserve Uganda’s literary, scientific and cultural heritage in all of its diversity. It is one of Africa’s leading academic societies with a respected multi-disciplinary tradition. Comprised of men, women and institutions from Uganda and many other countries, the Uganda Society is also a lively mixture of scholars, diplomats, students and professionals. It is open to everyone interested in Ugandan life and culture

Lectures

On the fourth Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m., the Uganda Society presents a lecture at the Uganda Museum. Distinguished local and visiting artists and professionals offer a varied program of lectures, debates and academic discussions that are open to all. Recent lectures have included topics as wide ranging as Ugandan poetry, agriculture, art, multi-lateral debt relief and political thought.

Check out our current lecture schedule in News. Look at past lectures at Lectures.

History

Founded in 1923 as the Uganda Literary and Scientific Society, the Uganda Society attained its current name in 1933. For fifty years until 1983, the society fostered and facilitated scientific, literary, social, economic and cultural pursuits in Uganda. Now it is renewing its tradition with a full calendar of programs at the Museum, excursions and special events. These, along with The Uganda Journal, provide a vigorous forum for general debate and deepen popular understanding of current issues.

The Uganda Journal

Since 1934, the Uganda Society publication, The Uganda Journal, has been praised throughout Africa and around the world. After eleven years of silence, The Uganda Journal was published again in December 1995. It offers an international readership regular access to contemporary studies, ideas and information.

The Uganda Society Library

The Uganda Society has also reopened its library, which is located at the Uganda Museum. The purpose of the library is to acquire and maintain valuable volumes and documents concerning African history, anthropology , languages and natural history with an emphasis on Uganda. There is also a large collection of maps and rare old photographs of Uganda’s land and people. Library hours are posted on the door of the library. Members are encouraged to browse through the library’s collection.
