1. Gatumba
Overview
- Collectivity of Women's Associations from
Gatumba (western suburb of
Bujumbura)
- Comprised of elementary school teachers displaced
from different suburbs
of the capital city
Objectives
- mutual support group for teachers
- support children who need to go to school
Activities
- raise funds to build a new school.
- creating networks to keep members in contact with
other women's groups in the country.
- raise awareness of the needs of street children.
- teach the children .
2. The Martin Luther King Center
Overview
- center for the youth.
- work with young women
throughout the country
Objectives
- support young women in need of counseling help
Activities
- visits young women working together on projects
in displaced camps, schools, communities
- provide young women with help, advice, and counseling
to help them achieve their goals
3. FAWE, Burundi (Forum for African
Women in Education, Burundi)
Overview
- pan-African non-governmental organization -- PanAfrican.
- Concerned with the education of young women.
- seeks outside and government funding to support
and encourage women in education
Objectives
- promote awareness about discrimination that young
girls and young women experience in education.
- publicize policies that discriminate against women
- question outdated traditions that do not support
the education of women
4. Twung’ubumwe Turwany’inzara Assocation
"Let's Join Forces and Win the Fight Against Hunger"
Overview
- inter-ethnic assocation of women, many of whom are
displaced
Objectives
- mutual support
- prevent hunger
- create an
environment of mutual trust between former neighbors
Activities
- farming and basket-weaving
5. "Duhozanye" Association
“Let's Console Each Other"
Overview
- comprised of displaced women primarly from Kayanza
- they have encouraged the formation of this association
in their home towns.
Objectives
- bridge the ethnic gap
- mutual support
- reconnection with former neighbors
6. Ishirahamwe Ry’abakenyezi Bateshejwe Izabo (Association
of Women Who Were Forced Out of Their Homes) Sharing Stories of Their Displacement
Overview
- "rima wihe" - work the land and provide for yourself.
- comprised of displace
women from the suburbs
- many live in displace
camps or with relatives
Objectives
- prevent personal isolation
- seek support for basic goods for the home
- rebuild ethnic trust
Activities
- communal farming
7. SWAA, Burundi
Society for Women with Aids in Africa, Burundi
Overview
- non-governmental organization comprised of doctors,
nurses, social workers, and volunteers
Objectives
- to support women living with HIV/AIDS
Activities
- providing medication and counseling for those
in need
- visit the sick who cannot afford transportation
to the SWAA office
- seek outside support for new projects and medication
