It has been a privilege and an honor for us to work with all of you over the last three days, and learn about the challenges you face and the successes you have achieved. It is our sincere hope that this workshop, in some small but meaningful way has made a meaningful contribution to promoting the cause of women issues in your homes, in your organizations or associations, and in the overall peace process.
It is clear that the women of Burundi are living proof that peace is possible, indeed imminent in the country. Burundian women are strong advocates in their daily lives, and the next step is to integrate this into the peace process locally nationally and in Arusha.
To talk about peace is easy. To live in peace is not always so easy. It is our hope that this workshop has reinforced and invigorated your quest to develop practical strategies to facilitate stability and long-term peace, built on your accomplishments and recognize the challenges that lie ahead.
You have discussed several important themes, specifically relatif to feminism and the power of women in the strategies and practical methods of conflict resolution. You have also exchanged ideas, stories and personal experiences that have enriched all of us. Most importantly, this workshop has brought together women that represent the country’s wonderful diversity. Friendships have been established and a wider community of advocates for peace is the result.
There are numerous people who deserve to be recognized at this point, since this workshop is the result of a group effort.
Many of you played leadership roles over the last three days, served as workshop organizers, moderators, group leaders and group recorders. Others made formal presentations that laid out workshop themes. Let us take a few moments to mention some of these people. Jacqueline Muhorakeye, Gaudence Capitoline, Adelaide, Leatitia, Leopold Ndayisaba, Honarable Euphrasie Nahimana.
The U.S.I.P ( United States Institute of Peace) also deserves to be recognized and thanked for funding this workshop. Their support symbolizes the recognition by the many friends of Africa and Burundi that you the women of Burundi, are crucial to rebuilding the Burundi nation and building the foundation for a just and long lasting peace.
Finally we would like to thank you, the participants for your active participation in the workshop proceedings. Each and everyone of you advocate of peace in your homes and organizations and associations.
As Burundi moves toward peace and prosperity in the new millennium. You have the potential to be an important part of the process. The Burundi People will be inspired by your commitment to conflict resolution and to genuine peace for all.
