PENN IN AFRICA

Business & Development

Wharton African Business Forum

This annual event strives to provide comprehensive coverage of pivotal events affecting business on the African continent. Organized by the Wharton African Students Association, it calls upon experts from the academic, government, and corporate communities to address subjects as diverse as the role of information technology, the impact of geopolitics on investment opportunities, and training business students for living and working in Africa. The forum strives to promote business education for Africans and others interested in African economic growth, and provides an opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to network with sources of intellectual and financial capital.

Center for Community Partnerships

Founded in 1992, the Center for Community Partnerships is Pennâs primary vehicle for developing and implementing cooperative links between universities and the business and civic communities in which they are located. Academically based community service (ABCS) is at the core of the Centerâs work. It seeks to link teaching and problem-oriented research to the practical problems that urban communities face in areas as diverse as housing, education, business development, and civic participation. This initiative has launched a transnational research project by the International Consortium on Higher Education, Civic Responsibility, and Democracy. The Consortium is a joint effort of the Council of Europe, the Joint Education Trust (JET) in South Africa, and various U.S. higher educational associations. JET brings together community, government, business, and education groups for the improvement of educational opportunity in South Africa. The goal is to provide models for service learning in the disciplines of management, finance, and commerce as a way of bringing students at prestigious business schools in contact with the practical problems of economic development in their urban neighborhoods.
Wharton Small Business Development Center

In the past decade, over 20,000 small businesses and entrepreneurs in Greater Philadelphia have benefited from the services of the Wharton Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The Center provides two key services: one-on-one management consulting, and affordable business training. In addition, the Wharton SBDC supports special projects through the Venture Initiation Program (VIP), the India/China Research Project, and the West Philadelphia Enterprise Center, a small business incubator. Currently, in cooperation with the University of Cape Town, South Africa, the SBDC is designing a business plan for Philadelphia area companies to distribute products developed by African entrepreneurs.
