Call for Papers: "New African Diaspora", UPenn 10/2001
This is a CALL FOR PAPERS for the ninth annual African
Studies Consortium Workshop which will convene on the
Penn campus on Friday, October 26, 2001. This year's
theme is the "New African Diaspora" and all
proposed panels and papers must relate to this theme.
The workshop will focus on the growth of new African
immigrant communities, especially in North America,
and will examine their experiences in relation both
to their host communities and to their countries of
origin. We are looking especially for reports on recent
research and on exemplary projects initiated by or
within African immigrant communities.
Panel openings are limited, and potential participants
should send one page abstracts to Lynette Loose lloose@sas.upenn.edu
no later than August 24, 2001. Contributors will be
notified by September 10 regarding a place in the program.
The annual Fall Consortium Workshop is free and open
to the public. Visitors to Philadelphia may also want
to take in a related exhibition on "Philadelphia's
African Immigrants," which will open in early
October at the Balch Institute of Ethnic Studies in
downtown Philadelphia.
