The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA)
invites proposals from researchers for possible inclusion in its new
multinational working group (MWG) on the theme of ãAfrica and Its Diasporaä.
The MGW is the flagship research vehicle employed by CODESRIA for the promotion
of multi-country and multidisciplinary reflections on critical questions of
concern to the African social research community. The research that will be
carried out will focus on the range of topics covering the historic and
contemporary African Diaspora, the demography and culture linkage and political
and economic linkage between Africa and its Diasporas, diasporic processes and
their interfaces with globalization, and educational and scientific flows
between Africa and its Diasporas. Proposals should not exceed 3000 words or 12
double-spaced pages, and should include a clear statement of the purpose of the
project and the problematic to be researched, a review of literature and a
description of the methodology to be used, detailed calendar of work and a

Berkshire Publishing Group and CQ Press are preparing the Encyclopedia of Global
Perspectives on the United States for publication in June 2005. The encyclopedia
will explore the role and image of the United States from the viewpoints of the
peoples and nations of the world. The editor is searching for African scholars
to contribute articles on the African nations that are still unassigned. The
articles will include historical coverage as well as a contemporary analysis of

FELLOWSHIP: IHR MELLON FELLOWSHIPS FOR DISSERTATION RESEARCH IN HUMANITIES

The fellowships are administered by the Institute of Historical Research (IHR)
at the University of London, and are funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The fellowships are intended to help students registered as doctoral candidates
in the humanities at a North American university to deepen their ability to
develop knowledge from original sources. Two types of fellowships are offered.
Pre-Dissertation fellowship programme (max 2 months) is offered to help
candidates to draw up and revise a dissertation proposal and Dissertation

The NSEP program awards scholarships to U.S citizens for study of world regions

FELLOWSHIP: POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN DEMOGRAPHY AT UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN
Center for Actuarial Research (CARe) of the University of Cape Town has 2
postdoctoral posts in Demography commencing in January 2006. Applicants must
have recently completed their doctoral studies on a topic congruent with the
Centerâs current research profile: measurement of mortality and fertility in
developing countries, and modeling the spread and impact of HIV in Southern
Africa. Particular emphasis is placed on the rigorous analysis and

RESEARCH GRANTS: FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
The International Foundation for Science (IFS) is an independent international
research council that is based in Stockholm, Sweden. The mission of IFS is to
strengthen the scientific research capacity of developing countries in science
fields related to the sustainable management of biological and water resources.
Research proposals submitted to IFS should be from biological, chemical,
physical, sociocultural or economic science fields, and relevant for the
conservation, production or renewable utilization of biological or water
resources. IFS awards research grants with a maximum value of USD 12,000 for
the purchase of equipment, expendable supplies, fieldwork activities, etc.

In 2006, Operation Crossroads Africa will sponsor projects in Ethiopia, Gambia,

any of the five types of projects: community construction/community

UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL: FIVE-WEEK INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL PROGRAMME (June
24-July 29, 2006)

The International School offers the educational experiences that appropriately
complement the institutionâs curriculum while adding significant cultural
dimensions to studentsâ life experiences. The programme in 2006 will run at the
Howard College campus in Durban. Courses offered are as follows: Culture &
Diversity in the Rainbow Nation (Consisting out of four modules, this course
explores language, culture, media, and political influences in modern South
Africa); Zulu Language & Culture (Learn to speak basic isiZulu in addition to
Zulu customs, art, music & history); Service Learning (In addition to a secured
and supervised placement that provides a hands-on learning experience, the
student will visit urban and rural environmental and development projects and
will be exposed to a range of social, cultural, and historical sites during
their stay). All courses offered are 16 UKZN credits per course with a maximum
of 32 (two courses) for the International School session that may be taken by
individual students. The programme is intensive and interactive, and students
have the opportunity to gain a wealth of knowledge through lectures,
out-of-class excursions, and experiential learning. The fee for the
International School programme 2006 is US$2500. This covers almost all
studentsâ needs as soon as they arrive at the Durban airport: tuition fees for
up to two courses, course readers, accommodation in university housing,
excursions, and transport related to programme activities. Students are

PENN SUMMER PROGRAMS IN AFRICA: PENN-IN-TANZANIA, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (July
3-August 9, 2006)

Penn-in-Tanzania is a five-week program which will provide students with an
opportunity to study at the University of Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania. The
program offers a menu of courses covering topics on Tanzania and other East
African countries. Courses offered include Government, Politics, and
Development in East Africa; Social Structure of Tanzania Societies; and Swahili
Language and Culture. Weekly field trips will be organized for each course
within and around Dar es Salaam. Participants in the program will experience
Tanzaniaâs new multi-party democratic system and liberalized market economy.
They will stay with Tanzania host families to experience the countryâs diverse

COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND/CUNY: TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN AFRICAN HISTORY

tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of African History, beginning
September 2006. A PhD in African history with emphasis on West and Central

MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW

The Dept of Political Science, Michigan State University is offering a
full-time, one-year, renewable postdoctoral research fellowship, beginning
August 16, 2006. Applicants must have a PhD in political science or related
field (economics, sociology, social psychology) and experience in the use of
advanced statistics. Responsibilities will include developing a program of
research based on three rounds of existing Afrobarometer data across upto 18
countries (see www.afrobarometer.org), implementing the research program
through a series of publications, assisting in the management of a large scale
public opinion data sets and related tasks and participating in Afrobarometer
conferences in the U.S and Africa. Salary range is $30,000-$40,000. Mail

The Five College consortium (Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke

Holyoke College announce a tenure-track position (with an initial three-year
renewable contract) for an ethnomusicologist whose research and teaching
