Conference: "Conflict and Peacemaking in Africa" The Haverford-Bryn Mawr Africana Studies Program, a constituent part of the Penn-Haverford-Bryn Mawr-Swarthmore African Studies Consortium, will hold this conference-workshop, in association with the US Institute of Peace, on Thursday afternoon April 1 and Friday all day, April 2. The conference- workshop will include roundtable discussions, featuring Haverford and Bryn Mawr faculty and USIP invited experts on conflict and conflict resolution in Africa. Topics include "Healing and Reconciliation Processes," "African Resource Wars," "Ethnopolitics and Conflict," and "AIDS, Disease and Conflict." The events are open to the public. Specifics available closer to the date.

CALL FOR PAPERS: PERSPECTIVES ON YORUBA HISTORY AND CULTURE

(March 26-28, 2004)
This conference, which will be held at the University of Texas at Austin, will be centered on the Yoruba to review the state of knowledge, the various advances already made, the connections with comparative and diaspora history, the critique of old and new sources, and the identification of new areas worthy of investigation. Papers will be welcome that raise historical, cultural, methodological, and theoretical questions that address the strengths and voids by focusing on relevant issues and empty issues and empty spaces in Yoruba history and culture, as well as its global spread in the African diaspora. "Africa and Its Diaspora: Interrogating Cultural Identities and Performance" (DUBOIS - NKRUMAH - DUNHAM ANNUAL CONFERENCE, April 2-3, 2004) The theme of this inaugural meeting highlights the central role of culture in the works of the founding figures in the development of the discipline of Africana Studies. Conference organizers seek contributions that explore the concept of culture in varying and transforming ways, including papers that examine the formation of cultural identities at individual, group, national and transnational levels; performance as a means of producing and reproducing cultural traditions; culture as a force for change; aesthetic production; family and kinship systems; health; economy; and religion. Submissions from graduate students and community activists are welcome. All conference sessions will be held on the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh. CALL FOR PAPERS: MEMORY AND IDENTITY IN ASIA AND AFRICA

(late 2004/early2005)
In recent humanities research, an increasing number of interests are grouped under the common heading of memory. Inspired by this memory boom, Reiko Abe and Anne Thelle Backer (University of Oslo) plan to organize a project that will bring together various research topics which have 'memory and identity' as their focus. The conference will invite scholars to discuss set texts; present papers; and participate in a roundtable discussion over a three-day period. NEW JOURNAL: AFRIQUE & HISTOIRE

YOUNG SCHOLARS' SYMPOSIUM ON AFRICA (March 12-13, 2004) The Stanford Journal of International Law will host a Symposium dedicated to research on African legal developments on March 12-13, 2004 to encourage legal scholarship on this topic and provide a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue. The symposium will consist of several panel discussions covering a broad array of legal topics. While the forum will highlight the works of young scholars, panel discussions will include prominent academics and practitioners whose work draws them to Africa and international law.
