FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

 

FOREIGN LANGUAGE & AREA STUDIES FELLOWSHIP

Academic Year 2002/2003

 

The African Studies Center at Penn will award five Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) to graduate students for academic year 2002/2003.

FLAS fellowships award an $11,000 stipend and $10,000 towards tuition costs. Tuition costs in excess of $10,000 are the responsibility of the student’s school at Penn.

Applicants must be U. S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents who are or will be accepted in a program that combines foreign language training with international or area studies.

Fellowship guidelines:

. Students must be enrolled in a formal domestic or overseas academic program of full-time study during the academic year

. FLAS fellows may conduct dissertation research abroad during the academic year (only students who are at the advanced level of language proficiency can be approved to use a FLAS for dissertation research).

. Students who wish to use an award for a formal study abroad program must be at the intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency.

. Students not conducting dissertation research must be enrolled in both language and area or international studies courses.

. FLAS fellows must receive full credit from the university or programs they attend.

. Students must be nominated by their graduate chair to be considered for an award.

. curriculum vita

. two faculty letters of recommendation

. a one-page essay describing why the study of an African language is essential to a student’s graduate program of study and career goals.
