From the Director, about FLAS

Dear Africanist Faculty Members, Graduate Chairs, and Program Assistants:

The African Studies Center is pleased to announce that five Foreign and Language Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships will be awarded in African languages to graduate students for the 2002-2003 academic year. FLAS fellowships are open to graduate students i n SAS and the professional schools who are U. S. citizens or permanent residents. Both incoming and continuing graduate students at Penn are eligible. The fellowships pay $10,000 tuition and an $11,000 stipend. Tuition costs in excess of $10,000 are the r esponsibility of the student's school at Penn. Please alert students in your school, department or graduate group who might be eligible. The application deadline is February 20, 2002.

To help recruit outstanding new graduate students for work in African Studies at Penn, the Center encourages graduate groups to consider using the FLAS awards as part of larger, multi-year fellowship packages in appropriate cases. For incoming stud ents, such packages must be negotiated between the African Studies Center and graduate groups/professional schools/departments. Please do not hesitate to contact the Director, Lee Cassanelli, for more information.

2) All candidates must be formally nominated by their graduate

group/department, or professional school, which are responsible for ranking their students and forwarding all materials to us by February 20, 2002.

3) For incoming students, applications consist of a letter of nomination and a complete copy of their application dossier.

4) For continuing students, applications consist of a completed application form, an official transcript, two faculty recommendations, and a statement by the student indicating why he/she wishes to study an African language and how the study of Africa fits into his/her academic goals.
