OLS SOUTHERN SECTOR UPDATE 97/24 18 June 1997

A weekly report on major developments

concerning relief operations in southern Sudan

SEEDS AND TOOLS DELIVERIES RESUME...

The distribution of seeds and tools in Yei County, Eastern Equatoria, resumed on 17 June, following its disruption due to unavailability of road transport. Delivery of seeds and tools supplied by UNICEF, OXFAM, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and ACROSS, and non-food items coordinated by non-OLS NGO Christian Ecumenical Action for Sudan (CEAS) are scheduled. The seeds and tools and non-food relief items will be distributed to some 20,000 vulnerable households, predominately recent returnees. Distribution of seeds and tools to other locations in southern Sudan will resume pending the repair of the UNICEF-contracted Buffalo aircraft (call sign B4) that was damaged on 23 May in Aburoc during take-off. With the increased delivery capacity created by flight clearance for the C-130 Hercules aircraft, WFP has also offered to sub-contract a second Buffalo aircraft (call sign B5) to OLS agencies needing to urgently transport large amounts of cargo.

HEALTH COORDINATION MEETING SCHEDULED...

The quarterly OLS health coordination meeting is taking place in Embu, Kenya, from 18-20 June. The agenda includes three-month programme activity briefings by participating NGOs, and discussions on improving outbreak preparation, training of medical assistants, progressing policy development for malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted disease, and disease specific updates including guinea worm eradication, river blindness and expanded programme of immunization (EPI).

MEDAIR STAFF RETURN TO ATAR...

Staff of OLS NGO MEDAIR returned to Atar on 15 June, accompanied by the OLS Security Officer, after an absence of 16 days due to insecurity. The team was relocated to Lokichokio when local cattle raiding jeopardized security. MEDAIR has been in the area since February 1996 running a primary health care clinic and six primary health care units in the surrounding area. They have also conducted programmes in education, water and health training.

YEI BOMBED...

The town of Yei was bombed at mid-day on 13 June. Details regarding casualties and damage was not available. This is the fifth bombing of the area in the past three months.

SHOTS FIRED AT NCA VEHICLE...

A vehicle belonging to the Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) was fired upon while traveling on the Narus-Natinga road on 13 June. One bullet hit the vehicle, but no injuries to staff were reported.

WFP TEAM RELOCATED FROM AYIEN...

Three WFP staff were relocated from Ayein on 16 June due to insecurity in nearby Panthou. The team moved north of Ayein as a precaution and were later flown to Lokichokio when the situation did not improve.

OX PLOUGH PROJECT CONTINUES IN TONJ...

World Vision International's (WVI) ox plough project is ongoing in Tonj, with fields ready for planting. WVI reports that their ox plough training is now involving sixteen bulls.
