INTERNATIONAL DIRECTORY OF AFRICAN STUDIES SCHOLARS
The International Directory of African Studies Scholars is maintained by Dr. Joseph Caruso (African Studies Librarian at Columbia University), and is available online through The Columbia University Gopher and through the African Studies Internet Resources Homepage.
It contains records of individuals who have identified themselves as being involved in any aspect of African studies. Each record, submitted by the person listed, contains the name, title, affiliation, contact information (generally mail address, phones, FAX, and full email address), and a short statement of the person's activities, teaching and/or research interests, specializations, etc. in the area of African Studies.
HOW TO ACCESS THE INTERNATIONAL DIRECTORY OF AFRICAN STUDIES SCHOLARS
The IDASS can be accessed via any of three internet connection methods: gopher, telnet, or worldwide web. The particular method you use will depend upon the type of internet connection you have, and the connection services and resources available to you through your host or internet provider.
a) BY GOPHER:
Simply gopher to: gopher.cc.columbia.edu 71 (You may have to type the "o" command to tell your gopher client software to "open" a box allowing you to type in this address), and then navigate down through the menus as follows. (Be sure to use port 71): CLIO Plus/SELECTED TOPICS/AFRICAN STUDIES
b) BY TELNET:
Simply telnet to: columbianet.columbia.edu Once connected to Columbianet, select the menu item marked "CLIO Plus." Within that menu, you'll find an item on the list labelled "SELECTED TOPICS: Internet Resources By Subject" Select that one, and within it you'll find "AFRICAN STUDIES"
c) BY WORLDWIDE WEB:
If you use MOSAIC, NetScape, Lynx or other web-browser, use this URL: gopher://gopher.cc.columbia.edu:71/11/clioplus/scholarly/Afr/Scholars
This will connect you in one step directly to the Directory.
