Society of Africanist Archaeologists

The Society of Africanist Archaeologists is an organization of archaeologists, researchers from associated disciplines and others who share an interest in African prehistory and African societies. Our membership is international, with participation from Africa, the Americas, Europe and Asia, and is actively involved in research in many African countries.

SAfA publishes a bulletin, _Nyame Akuma_, which appears twice a year and which contains short reports on research projects as they take place around the continent. In addition, SAfA remembers receive the journal _African Archaeological Review_ at a substantial discount from its list price. _African Archaeological Review_ is an international journal for the publication of authoritative articles on African archaeology; it is published by Plenum Press and appears four times each year. The combination of these two information sources gives subscribers a very comprehensive picture of African archaeological research.

SAfA also holds biennial conferences devoted to African archaeology and related research topics. The 13th SAfA Conference was held between 3 September and 6 September, 1996, at the Dymaczewo Conference Centre, Poznan, Poland. The 14th Conference will be held in May, 1998, at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. SAfA membership also gives voting rights in Society decisions, including decisions about conference locations.

SAfA membership is worthwhile for anyone with an interest in African archaeology, palaeoanthropology or history. Our membership dues structure is very reasonable, with special provisions for students, retired people and members with reduced access to convertible currencies.
