Summer 1997 Ethiopia and Eritrea Fulbright/Hays, Group Projects Abroad (Faculty Program)

The Consortium for Inter-Institutional Collaboration in African and Latin American Studies (CICALS) is welcoming applications for a five-week Fulbright Hays In-Country Language and Area studies Seminar to be held at MSU and in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Asmara, Eritrea between June 16 and July 21, 1997. Twelve qualified faculty employed at Great Lakes College Association (GLCA), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) and other affiliated institutions will participate in a one week on-campus area studies and orientation institute before flying to Ethiopia and Eritrea to complete four weeks of in-country studies. Approximately two weeks each will be spent in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Grants cover round trip airfare and in-country expenses. Each participant will be expected to participate fully in all phases of the program, including a study program designed to enhance teaching/research directly relevant to her/his home institution. Swahili Intensive Summer Institute:

June 16 to July 20, 1997

The African Studies Center and the Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic Asian and African Languages will offer a five-week intensive summer program in KiSwahili preceded by a workshop on the culture of East Africa. Three KiSwahili levels (introductory, intermediate, and advanced) will be offered. Limited Foreign Language and Area Studies, (FLAS) fellowships will be available for intermediate and advanced KiSwahili attendees. The deadline for the FLAS fellowship was February 21, 1997; however, FLAS fellowships will continue to be available through the end of April, subject to availability of funds. African Film Festival

April 18-19, 1997

The African Studies Center at Michigan State University is sponsoring a film festival Friday, April 18 - Saturday, April 19, 1997. The festival, "A Celebration of African Film: Filmmakers from Across Africa", will feature the works of Bassek ba Kohbio, Djibril Diop Mambety, Gaston Kabore, Ngozi Onwurah, Flora M'Mbugu-Schelling, Salem Mekuria and Tsitsi Dangarembga. In addition to featuring African films, we have invited the filmmakers to introduce their films and participate in discussions about their work. This unique celebration of African film is made possible by the African Literature Association which will hold its twenty-third annual conference at Michigan State University, April 16-19, 1997. We invite you to share in the celebration by attending the festival and meeting the filmmakers. All showings are free of charge and open to everyone. African Literature Association (ALA) at MSU

"FESPACO Nights in Michigan: African Film and Literature" is the title of the Twenty-Third Annual Conference of the ALA. The Conference will be held at the Kellogg Center at Michigan State University and will focus on recent developments in African film. Virtual Diplomacy

The United States Institute of Peace presents a conference on The Global Communications Revolution and International Conflict Management. The conference will explore how information technology and telecommunications are affecting the jurisdiction of nations and reshaping global affairs. The event will take place April 1st and 2nd of 1997 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C. The conference entitled, "Virtual Diplomacy", will catalyze original thinking about the impact of the global information revolution on nations, institutions, and communities worldwide and encourage new alliances to assess improved approaches to preventing, improving, and settling international conflicts. West Africa and the Global Challenge

The West African Research Association and West African Research Center in cooperation with the Center for Folklife programs and Cultural Studies-Smithsonian Institution present the First International Symposium on West Africa and the Global Challenge. The conference will take place June 22-28, 1997 in Dakar, Senegal. The topics include African Diaspora, West African Research, or Contemporary Issues in West Africa. Interstate Lakes and Rivers of Africa

The Zoology Department at the University of Nairobi in Kenya and the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (Department of Aquatic Environment and Aquaculture) will be organizing the 1st Circular & Call for Papers International Symposium. The theme will be Advances in Research Management and Sustainable Development of Interstate Lakes and Rivers of Africa. The symposium will take place December 15, 1997 through December 19, 1997. The symposium will focus on African Inland-water Ecosystems that are shared by two or more countries: their Resources, recent advances in Applied Research, Development Programs, Environmental Policies and Strategic Plans for integrated and Sustainable Resource Management. Graduate Fellow Position Announcement The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks suitable candidates for a position of Graduate Fellow with the ILRI based at the offices in Niamey, Niger. The Graduate Fellow will work in Niger under the direct supervision of Dr. Timothy O. Williams and with colleagues from the natural and social sciences. The research is expected to lead to the completion of his or her Ph.D. dissertation. Funds provided to ILRI by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development will support the Graduate Fellow's stipend, benefits and field research costs. The field work could begin as early as April 1997 but not later than September 1997.
