Professor John Rickford will provide enlightenment on the subject of Ebonics with a lecture entitled Ebonics: African American Language & Culture: Roots and Branches. Professor Rickford is a professor of Linguistics at Stanford University. The lecture will be held from 7:00-9:00pm and will take place in the MSU Union Building in Gold Rooms A&B.

Title VI FLAS Fellowships

A. African Studies Center:

The African Studies Center at Michigan State University announces that the 1997-98 Academic year U.S. Department of Education, Title VI, Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship application forms are available from the Center. FLAS awards requires that an applicant must hold a bachelor's degree by the time the fellowship will begin, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, be admitted to the appropriate graduate department and undertake an approved program of African language and area studies. The deadline for applications is February 21, 1997. B. Center for Advanced Studies
of International Development:

FLAS Fellowship application forms for the 1997-98 academic year are now available in the CASID office, 306 Berkey Hall. The fellowships are awarded to MSU graduate students who are enrolled in a program that combines study of a modern foreign language with advanced training and research in development studies or in the international development aspects of professional or other fields of study. Languages included are Arabic, Portuguese, Swahili (all levels), Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish (advanced levels). Less commonly taught languages will be considered upon inquiry. Thanks to satellite technology, students in six African countries will have the opportunity to take courses on electrical engineering taught by a professor at an American University. The distance-learning project entitled "The African Virtual University", is sponsored by the World Bank and was developed to provide engineering to over 40 nations. As of now the six countries participating in the project are Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Operation Crossroads
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Global Volunteers/Interns/Project Directors Crossroads offers an opportunity to do summer work and participate in multi-disciplinary grassroots projects that Africans and Brazilians in rural communities deem valuable. There are 20 - 25 projects planned; the need is for 200 - 250 volunteers/interns and 20 - 25 Project Directors.

Crossroads recently announced that ONLINE applications are available for Project Directors/Leaders (26 years old and over with experience) and for Volunteers/Interns (college age and up; ALL are welcome).

Students generally arrange with their campuses to receive academic credit (typically 7 to 15 units) for their summer internship experience. African American Studies: African Diaspora Position, Georgia State University. The Department of African-American Studies at Georgia State University invites applications for an anticipated African Diaspora position beginning Fall 1997. The position is a tenure-track appointment at the advanced assistant or associate professor level. Although discipline and speciality areas are open, the successful candidate's teaching and research interests must focus on Africa and or the African Diaspora. Expertise on women in the African Diaspora is strongly preferred. The candidate will teach and develop undergraduate and graduate level courses. Anthropology: Central Michigan University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Cultural Anthropology, Assistant Professor level, beginning Fall 1997. The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. in anthropology by May 15, 1997, with research specializations in anthropology or education, and either African (preferred), Asian, or Pacific cultures. Duties include teaching Education and Culture courses primarily for teacher education students, geographic area course, and other cultural anthropology courses. Preferred: candidates whose research includes issues of ethnicity or gender in education. The Department has 27 faculty, undergraduate programs in sociology, anthropology, and social work; MA program in sociology.
