CONFERENCES

A Special African Lakes Conference of the MSU Program on the ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lakes of East Africa: <> will be held February 25-26, 1994 on the MSU campus. The conference will include African and North American scholars of varying disciplines (physical, biological, social), perspectives, and nations. Papers will concern current scientific research findings about the lakes and the pressing issues of management and development of the fisheries and aquatic resources. FELLOWSHIPS

Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) are ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ available to students pursuing graduate work in foreign languages and area studies. To compete for a fellowship award, MSU students may apply to three centers on campus - African Studies Center, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Center for Advanced Study of International Development (CASID). Academic year FLAS fellowships cover the cost of tuition and fees and provide a stipend of $8,000.

The African Studies Center awards fellowships to graduate students studying any of the 25 African languages approved on campus during the 1994-95 academic year. It plans to offer FLAS fellowships during the summer of 1994 for the intensive study of intermediate and advanced Kiswahili and for the study of Shona in the summer of 1995. These summer FLAS awards will cover full tuition and fees for the six to eight credit courses and will provide a stipend of $1,500. Full-year and summer FLAS fellowships are available through the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies for the study of Portuguese (all levels) and Spanish (advanced levels only). *The deadline is February 16, 1994*. The Center for the Advanced Study of International Development (CASID) awards fellowships to graduate students enrolled in programs which combine the study of a modern foreign language with advanced training and research in international development studies. CASID offers fellowships for the study of the following languages: all levels of Arabic, Swahili, and Portuguese; intermediate and advanced levels (i.e. beyond the first 12 semester hours) of Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and French. Students who are studying other languages as part of their program in international development studies should contact the CASID office regarding their eligibility. 1994 Summer Intensive Language Fellowships are also available. *The application deadline is February 28, 1994*.
