The History Department at the University of Chicago invites
applications and nominations for a tenure-track assistant
professorship in African history to begin autumn 2007. Scholars with
broadly conceived research interests and demonstrated teaching
abilities in the economic, political, cultural, intellectual, and/or
social history of Africa from the 16th to the 20th centuries are
encouraged to apply. Although the Department prefers to make a
tenure-track appointment, applications from beginning associate
professors will also be considered. All research specialities are
welcome, and the Department is especially interested in scholars
whose work addresses issues of political economy, colonialism and
decolonization, religion, the making of diasporas, comparative labor
systems, large-scale migrations, medicine and public health, and the
gendering of social power. Please send a letter of application with
c.v., a dossier including three letters of recommendation, and a
chapter-length piece of writing by November 1st to African History
Search Committee, Department of History, University of Chicago, 1126
E. 59th St., SS Box 121, Chicago, IL 60637. Selected candidates
will be interviewed at the AHA annual meeting. The University of
Chicago is an AA/EOE.
