Head of Research - Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI)
Makerere University, Uganda
Opportunity: To investigate the most critical global infectious
diseases in a state-of-the-art institute vested in a leading African University.
The Infectious Diseases Institute is an independent organization
(Director Keith McAdam) within Makerere University; it represents a novel public-private
partnership housing cutting edge
clinical, laboratory and training facilities supported by robust
grants management, laboratory and IT data systems. Harnessing
worldwide expertise, this venture was established through the
Academic Alliance partnership between Ugandan, North American,
and European medical leaders "to build capacity in Africa for
the delivery of sustainable high quality HIV/AIDS care and prevention through training and
research."
The IDI facility, initially funded by Pfizer, is supporting
treatment for over 8,000 patients and already has a vigorous research portfolio focused on
antiretroviral care of a cohort of
these HIV-infected patients. David Thomas is returning to Johns
Hopkins University after establishing the post during his sabbatical. This leadership
opportunity includes existing data man-
agement, administrative, and laboratory support, as well as resources to build clinical
and translational research programs.
Professional profile: This accomplished scientist will have a
minimum of seven years experience in clinical investigation with
additional training and expertise in a related field such as HIV
medicine or epidemiology/statistics. The candidate will have a
strong background in collaborative research and research management, preferably (but not
necessarily) in resource restricted
areas. Persons with existing University appointments are encouraged to maintain those
during this three-year appointment.
