West African Research Association (WARA) Internships, Summer 1998



Three (3) 1998 Summer Minority Student Internships are being offered in West Africa in an effort to increase the active participation of minorities in international affairs (African Americans, Eskimo or Aleut, Native American Indians, Mexican Americans, Native Pacific Islanders, Puerto Ricans). Internships will be awarded to those who, in the judgment of the review panel, have demonstrated ability and potential to succeed in international studies, and have a genuine interest in African Affairs. Students without previous foreign travel are encouraged to submit applications. This internship program has been funded by a grant from the United States Department of Education.

Each internship will provide round trip travel to Madison, Wisconsin for a three-day Spring orientation; round trip travel to a West African country for four to six weeks; and a cost of living stipend of $ 1,500. The West African Research Center in Dakar, Senegal (WARC/CROA-Centre de Recherche Ouest Africaine) will assist the intern in locating lodging and identifying in advance the agency, university or other organization engaged in development activities in the host country.

The competition is open to U.S. citizens who are enrolled in the M.A. program of an accredited college or university in the United States. Candidates must submit one original and three copies of the following: (I) A three-page essay explaining his or her interests in international affairs and how the internship will further that interest at their college/university and beyond. The essay should include a discussion of any participation in international programs at home or abroad; (2) College transcripts; (3) Three letters of recommendation by professors; (4) Resume.
