The UCLA James S. Coleman African Studies Center, in conjunction with the Center for the Study of Women, invites applications for Residential Humanities Fellow- ships at the Institute for the Study of Gender in Africa. The Institute is de- signed to foster an academic atmosphere in which scholars, both African andnon-African, male and female, can come together and create a multi-faceted discourse from a humanities perspective on gender and identity in Africa.

The Institute offers two nine-month humanities residential fellowships annually. At least one fellowship is awarded to a scholar from Africa. Awards may be madeat the senior or junior levels. Senior fellows receive a stipend of US$32,000and junior fellows in the amount of US$25,000. In addition, each fellow isprovided with limited funds for medical insurance, relocation, and research.

Fellows must be in residence at the James S. Coleman African Studies Center during the entire period of their award. During this period, fellows are expected to be engaged in scholarly activity on a full-time basis. Fellows must be available for consultation with students and professional colleagues, make two or three formal presentations based on their research, and contribute generally to the intellectual discourse on African gender studies. Finally, they are expected to prepare interim and final reports on their activities during the tenure of the fellowship.

Applications are invited from scholars engaged in:

1) the study of the culture of gender

2) the development of multidisciplinary approaches to understanding genderin Africa, or

3) the examination of localized knowledge, historical dynamics, and power relations

Applicants must hold a Ph.D., M.F.A. or the equivalent in a humanitiesdiscipline. Individuals holding non-academic positions with exceptional scholarly work in relevant fields may apply. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate both excellence and originality in their research. Applicants must have a working competence in English and in the language(s) pertinent to their projects.

The deadline for submission of application materials to the Institute isFEBRUARY 13, 1998. Awards will be announced on or around April 15, 1998. The term of the awards will September 15, 1998 to June 15, 1999.
