Africanist Research Excellence Award, 2007
Description and Purpose
Nominations are invited for the 2007 Africanist Research Excellence Award
Committee. One award is offered annually on the occasion of the African
Conference at the University of Texas at Austin in March. Nominees will be
judged on the basis of demonstrated excellence in research; and leadership
in their respective fields. The aim of the Award is to recognize research
excellence by a scholar affiliated with a higher institution and working in
any field of African studies. Research excellence is judged relative to
career opportunity.
Eligibility
Nominees may be at any stage of their career. They must:
have a Ph.D.
degree or equivalent;
hold a full-time academic and/or research appointment;
have an excellent research record;
not be a prior recipient of the award.
Nomination Procedures
Nominations will be accepted from all disciplines in as much as the focus of
the nominee's research is on Africa. A candidate must be nominated for the
Award by one or more academic colleagues. Direct applications or
self-nomination is not acceptable.
Nominations should include:
A statement by the nominator(s) of the grounds upon which the Award
should be made. This should address the nominee's achievements in research
and the impact on African studies.
Curriculum vitae of the candidate, including a list of major
publications, other scholarly works, research funding, prizes, awards,
appointments etc.
A summary of the research programs that have been and are being
undertaken by the candidate including aims, significance, importance to the
field, and outcomes to date. The summary must not exceed two pages per
research program.
The original plus five copies of the nomination must be submitted by
February 15, 2006 to Toyin Falola, UT Africanist Award Selection Committee,

Incomplete or late applications will be deemed ineligible.
Selection Criteria
The selection committee will evaluate each candidate on the basis of the
quality of past achievements, measured by:
Exceptional academic record, awards and prizes, research performance and
evidence of significant refereed publications.
Leadership in the field of research.
Evidence that the candidate will continue to make an outstanding
contribution to research.
Awards will be made on the basis of excellence from the pool of
nominations but the committee reserves the right not to grant the award
should it judge that the nominations are not of sufficiently high standard
to meet the selection criteria.
