Funding Opportunities for Teachers, 1997

The Wisconsin International Outreach Consortium (WIOC) Announces a special Competition 1997 College Faculty Access Grants for Improvement of International Curricula Deadline for application: March 14, 1997.The Wisconsin International Outreach Consortium (WIOC) annually offers funds to faculty at Midwestern colleges for research or curriculum development using resources at UW-Madison or UW-Milwaukee. In 1997, the competition will be focused on curriculum building, in association with the WIOC Teacher Conference/Workshop "A Shifting Target: The Challenge of Teaching About Global Ethnicity in the College Classroom". College faculty interested in improving or building new curricula focused on more than one world area are encouraged to apply. Courses in all disciplines are eligible. Awards consist of two parts: (1) All expenses paid to the WIOC Teacher Conference/Workshop "A Shifting Target: The Challenge of Teaching About Global Ethnicity in the College Classroom" in Madison on June 2-4, 1997 (contact Heather Miller at the address on reverse for more details). (2) Up to $400 for work at libraries in Madison or Milwaukee, researching curricular projects that have an international focus or which encompass at least two area studies programs. The grants may be used for travel, lodging, parking, per diem, library copying, and miscellaneous supplies. Grants must be used before August 1, 1997.

Eligibility: Any current faculty member teaching or conducting research at a two-year, four-year, or technical college or university in the Upper Midwest. Faculty may also apply in "teams," with each member addressing a distinct area study. Preference will be given to those who have not previously received the award. Please note that in 1998 and 1999, grants will again be offered for either research or curriculum-building. In 2000, the grants will once more be focused on curriculum-building, in association with another Conference/Workshop.

Application: Be sure to provide the following in your letter of application: (1) your work and home addresses, phone numbers, and E-mail address if you have one; (2) the length of time required for your library research; and (3) a statement of purpose, including: a short description of the course, especially the subjects and areas you plan to compare; the number and type of potential students; and the resources available to you on your campus (or lack thereof).Please clearly state whether you are creating a new curriculum or improving an established course. A focus in line with the Conference theme is strongly encouraged, but not required. Teachers Summer Institute on West Africa and the Global Challenge in Senegal The West African Research Association in cooperation with the Center for Folklife Programs and Cultural Studies, Smithsonian Institution, is offering a Secondary School Teachers Institute "West Africa and the Global Challenge" June 22-28, 1997. Visit the GorÈe Island Slave House, attend symposium sessions, visit Senegalese schools and meet teachers, develop classroom curriculum about West Africa, preview films and literature. International Foundation for Education and Self-Help, (IFESH) is a private, nonprofit organization, whose purpose is to direct resources toward five world problem areas: hunger, illiteracy, unemployment, health care and economic development. The Educators for Africa Program, sponsored by IFESH, is a public-private sector initiative to permit teachers, school administrators, and professors from the United States to spend an academic year in Africa in Ghana, the Gambia, Nigeria, Kenya, Gabon, Benin, Uganda, and Ethiopia to teach at elementary and secondary schools, colleges, and universities. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, with a college degree (graduate degree preferred) and with five to seven years experience as a teacher, professor, or administrator.
