African American Postdoctoral Fellowships 1996-97

Purpose

This University is committed to enhancing the diversity of its faculty as well as the national faculty pool. Accordingly, these Fellowships are intended to foster the professional development of recent African American recipients of doctoral degrees (after January 1, l994) who are committed to careers in university research and teaching.

Eligibility

* Applicants must have successfully completed all doctoral degree requirements prior to September 1st of the Fellowship year and have received their Ph.D.. in one of the following fields: Anthropology, Biological Science Chemistry, Communication, Computer Science, Economics, English, Geology and Planetary Science, History, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and Astronomy, Political Science and Psychology.

* Preference will be given to those applicants who show promise for tenure track appointments that may become available at the University of Pittsburgh

Stipend

* The 1996-97 salary is to be announced (1995-96 was $30,000 for twelve months (eleven plus one month vacation)) Health insurance and other fringe benefits included.

Professional expenses: $2,500 per year for travel and related research costs.

* Fellows are expected to be in residence for V# duration of their appointment, to engage in advanced study, research and writing, and to teach one course Fellows are eligible for a maximum of two years of support

1. Cover letter indicating specific department of interest in Arts and Sciences. 2. Two or three page abstract of the applicant's dissertation. 3. Five to ten page proposal which discusses research materials, facilities to be used. 4. Statement of career objectives. 5. Curriculum vitae. 6. Certified graduate transcript. 7. Three letters of recommendation that address the applicant's qualifications for postdoctoral study and potential for achieving stated career objectives (Item 4).
