NWO-WOTRO: Open Competition 2003 for Research Projects, 04/02



The Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research (NWO-WOTRO) wishes to inform potential applicants of the open competitions for research projects starting in 2003. Research funded by WOTRO is focussed on the tropics and developing countries, covers all scientific disciplines, and may be of a fundamental or more applied nature. Scientific quality is the main selection criterion in all competitions.

Applications should be made on standard forms, which can be obtained from the WOTRO office or downloaded from the WOTRO-website, along with instructions (address and URL below). The website also provides more detailed information on the grants and annual competitions.

Individual projects

* Individual research projects for PhD or post-doc by preferably
Dutch university graduates. * Appointment for max. 4 yrs (PhD) or 2 yrs (post-doc) at Dutch re search institution. * Applications are made by senior researchers from a Dutch research
institution. * Min. 6 months fieldwork in the tropics required. * Research budget max. Ä 12,500 per year. * Applications in two stages: preliminary proposals and, upon invita tion, final proposals. * Deadline for preliminary applications: April 15, 2002.

PhD or post-doc grants for researchers from developing countries

* Individual research projects for PhD and post-doc by researchers
from developing countries. * Fellowships for 2-4 yrs (PhD), 1-2 yrs (post-doc). * Supervisor(s) from research institutions in both home country and
the Netherlands. * Applications are made by both supervisors (in The Netherlands and
home country). * Fieldwork in the tropics is not mandatory. * Total budget max. Ä 55,000 for 4-yr PhD; max. Ä 63,000 for 2-yr
post-doc (incl. living allowance and research budget. * Applications in two stages: preliminary proposals and, upon invita tion, final proposals. * Deadline for preliminary applications: April 15, 2002.

Integrated Programmes

* Small research programmes, preferably of a multi-disciplinary na ture. * Research subject should be related to one of the WOTRO themes: A. Sustainable Environment; B. Identity and Culture; C. Health; D. Poverty, Labour and Social Security.

* Combination of min. 2 PhD and/or post-doc projects * Based on partnership with research institutions and researchers in
the country(ies) of study. * Min. 6 months fieldwork in min. 50% of the projects. * Total budget max. Ä 453,781 (1 Mf) for max. 5 yrs. * Applications in two stages: preliminary proposals and, upon invita tion, final proposals. * Deadline for preliminary applications: September 1, 2002.

NEW! Capacity Building Grants Programme

* Small grants programme (projects may start in 2002). * Grants are available for the following activities: a. establishment of scientific collaborations between institutes in
developing countries and The Netherlands (open to all research ers); b. (local) dissemination of results (only research funded by WOTRO); c. travel by researchers from developing countries (ex-WOTRO re searchers only).

* Grants are max. Ä 11,000 for partnership grants and dissemination
grants; max. Ä 4,500 for travel grants. * Application must be made prior to the activity; the start should be
later than 2 months after the deadline. * Deadlines: March 1, August 1, December 1.
