Title VI Fellowships for full support of U.S. graduate students still are available at Michigan State University for:

EAST AFRICAN CULTURE INSTITUTE - JUNE 15-17, 2000

SWAHILI 2000 INTENSIVE SUMMER INSTITUTE - JUNE 19 - JULY 21, 2000

The Michigan State University African Studies Center with the Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages are offering a five-week Intensive Summer Program in Swahili June 19 - July 17, preceded by a workshop on East African Culture, June 15-17. For Swahili Institute fellowships, see below.

Courses are being offered at three levels:

Elementary Swahili (AFR 101A & 102A)

8 credits, 25 hours per week for five weeks

Intermediate Swahili (AFR 201A & 202A)

8 credits and 25 hours per week

Advanced Swahili (AFR 450A)

6 credits and 18 hours per week

TITLE VI SUMMER PROGRAM FELLOWSHIPS

Fellowships are available for students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents pursuing graduate degrees in African language and area studies at the Intermediate and Advanced levels. The FLAS Fellowships provide the costs of tuition and fees, a $2,400 stipend, and sometimes travel expenses for out-of-state students. Funding is provided by the U. S. Department of Education, under Title VI of the Higher Education Act. (Fellowships are not available for Elementary Swahili.) Contact Dr. Yacob Fisseha <fissehay@msu.edu> (see below).

FACULTY

Professor Deogratias Ngonyani, Ph.D. and from Tanzania is the program director. He is an MSU faculty member specializing in the linguistics of Swahili and other Bantu languages. All classes will be taught by native speakers of Swahili.

Kenyans, Tanzanians, and other MSU faculty will lecture on topics in East African studies.

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

The major emphasis of the Summer Program will be on developing and strengthening oral fluency, vocabulary acquisition, and aural comprehension, with appropriate attention to reading, pronunciation, grammar, and writing.

Evaluation of student achievement and proficiency will be conducted both informally and formally during and at the conclusion of the courses.

Each course offered in the Intensive Summer Program provides the equivalent of one academic year of language instruction.

TUITION & FEES*

Elementary and Intermediate Swahili

$1,850 for 8 credits (non-MSU students) Advanced Swahili

$1,400 for 6 credits (non-MSU students)

There are no fees for the East African Culture Institute.

FELLOWSHIPS

For students pursuing graduate degrees in African language and area studies, the U. S. Department of Education, under Title VI of the Higher Education Act, offers Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. These provide the costs of tuition and fees, a $2,400 stipend, and sometimes travel expenses for out-of-state students.

Applications are available from the African Studies Center. The initial deadline is February 18, 2000. Fellowships can be awarded any time after this date. Applications will be considered until April 7, 2000, although all fellowships may have been awarded by that date.

SUMMER WORKSHOP ON EAST AFRICAN CULTURE

A three-day, non-credit gratis workshop on East Africa for students, faculty, and members of the public with a special interest in East Africa will be offered June 15 - 17, 2000. Topics will include East African history, contemporary politics, geography, art, music, society, agriculture, health, and education. Lecturers will be drawn from across the nation and from Ethiopia as wel as from the more than 10 MSU faculty who have taught, worked, and conducted research in East African countries. This workshop precedes the Swahili Intensive Summer Language Program beginning on June 19. Swahili Intensive Summer Program participants are required to participate in this workshop.

SUMMER 2001: INTENSIVE SHONA will be offered at elementary,intermediate, and advanced levels.
