MIM Grant Writing / Mock Peer Review Workshop, 11/00

Workshop for Malaria Researchers from malaria-endemic countries attending the 49th Annual Meeting of the ASTMH, Houston, TX, USA 29 Oct - 2 Nov 2000

One of the pressing needs identified by malaria researchers from endemic countries is the need to be better equipped to write competitive grant proposals. To assist the community of researchers from malaria-endemic countries, MIM will hold a one-day workshop on grant writing and a mock peer review session on November 3rd at the 49th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), Houston, Texas, USA, 29 Oct - 2 Nov 2000. The workshop will be open to malaria researchers from endemic countries that are attending the ASTMH meeting. The workshop objectives are to provide information to demystify the grant application process, give tips on what makes a successful grant application and demonstrate the grant review process.

The workshop will consist of a morning session of seminars on grant writing and an afternoon session of a mock peer review. The grant writing seminars will focus on aspects of successful grant proposals with perspectives from representatives of the US National Institutes of Health and the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases at the WHO. Discussants will include information on grants currently available for scientists from the South.

The afternoon session will enable researchers to gain experience in the peer review process and to see the nature of discussions surrounding scientific content, relevance, research environment, budget and other issues taken up during the review process. Experienced reviewers will work with the workshop participants to review the grants. The grants for discussion will be given to the workshop participants two weeks prior to the workshop.

Eligibility:

1) MALARIA RESEARCHERS FROM MALARIA-ENDEMIC COUNTRIES ATTENDING THE ASTMH meeting are welcome to apply to attend the workshop.

2) MIM will sponsor three MALARIA RESEARCHERS from AFRICA to attend the workshop as well as to attend the ASTMH meeting - this includes roundtrip flight from Africa, accommodation, ASTMH meeting registration and per diem. The three researchers will be required to write a report on the workshop to be published as part of the next MIM newsletter.

NB - this workshop is intended for researchers with little successful grant writing experience.
