Graduate Research Assistant Fellowship Available in African Studies for
Academic Year 2004-05
The African Studies Graduate Research Assistant Fellowship for the 2004-05
academic year pays full tuition or dissertation fee and a stipend of
$15,750. The award is for nine months, from the beginning of September
through the end of May. Consistent with policies and practices of the
School of Arts and Sciences, the research assistant will be assigned
duties that average 20 hours a week on behalf of the African Studies
Center in the African Studies office in Williams Hall. The research
assistant will work under the supervision of the director and associate
director, who will assign his/her duties, and in consultation with the
research assistant, the hours that he/she will work. The duties of the
African Studies research assistant are many and varied and include:
planning, coordination, and editing the African Studies newsletter;
overseeing and posting a bi-weekly electronic news bulletin; collecting
information on current and planned research in or about Africa by Penn
faculty and graduate students, and by faculty at Bryn Mawr, Haverford,
Swarthmore, to be included on the African Studies home page; providing
logistical support for the Scholar for a Day event (organized by graduate
students each Spring); serving as liaison with and sharing the work of
responding to inquiries that come to our center from within and beyond the
University. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated
interest in and commitment to African Studies.

outlining their anticipated course work for 2004-05, and should ask their
Graduate Group chairs to submit a brief note of approval. Please address
