1998-99 Fulbright Scholar Grants in Sub-Saharan Africa

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS: August 1, 1997 Send e-mail to Mrs. Rhoad or Mrs. Perera to obtain the 1998-99 awards announcement, application forms, and additional information on individual grants.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizenship, Ph.D. at time of application, and university/college teaching and research experience.

About 10 research grants and 50 lecturing or lecturing/research awards are available in 25 sub-Saharan African countries, with many excellent opportunities for Africanists and non-Africanists alike. Here are a few highlights.

AFRICAN REGIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM -- (not including South Africa) - 10 awards open to all disciplines and for work in most sub-Saharan African countries.

TWENTY-FIVE SEPARATE COUNTRY PROGRAMS -- good spread of lecturing or lecturing/research positions in the humanities, social sciences and sciences, with education, law and business well represented. Ten countries offer "Any Field" open award possibilities.

OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO AFRICANISTS -- The following lecturing/research awards may be of special interest:

Botswana - African languages/linguistics

Eritrea - international relations; geography

Ethiopia - comparative political systems; economics

Kenya - government; international relations

Mauritius - international relations

Mozambique - international relations; sociology

South Africa - history of education in South Africa under colonialism,

segregation and apartheid

Tanzania - film studies
