Documenting Endangered Languages

This partnership between the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities supports projects to develop and advance knowledge concerning endangered human languages and aims also to exploit advances in information technology. Funding will support fieldwork and other activities relevant to recording, documenting, and archiving endangered languages, including the preparation of lexicons, grammars, text samples, and databases. Funding is available for 6-10 project grants ranging from $12,000 to $150,000 per year for 1-3 years and about 12 fellowships of either $40,000 (9-12 months) or $24,000 (6-8 months). Fellowships are not intended to support graduate course work or a master's degree, but may contribute to the completion of a doctoral dissertation. At least half the available funding will be awarded to projects involving fieldwork.

DEADLINE: November 1, 2004
