The Inter-University Council for East Africa Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program

The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) is pleased to announce the International Fellowships Program (IFP) of the Ford Foundation for resident citizens and other residents of Kenya Uganda and Tanzania. The IFP, which will provide support for up to three years of formal post-graduate study, is an ongoing project whose objective is to provide opportunities to exceptional individuals from diverse backgrounds, social groups and communities that lack systematic access to higher education. Women, people with disabilities and those from marginalized communities and working with rural and urban poor are encouraged to apply. Ford International Fellows, as recipients of the Fellowships will be called, are expected to use their education to become leaders in fields that further the Ford Foundation's goals of strengthening democratic values, reducing poverty and injustice, promoting international cooperation and advancing human achievement.

For the academic year 2004/2005, the program will offer 42 scholarships, tenable in any part of the world including East Africa, for study leading to the award of a Masters Degree. Applications for PhD studies will be invited during the subsequent competitions. Each Fellowship covers tuition fees, subsistence allowance, travel and other related expenses. To be eligible, applicants must satisfy the criteria below:

* Be resident citizens and other residents of Kenya, Tanzania, or
Uganda. * Demonstrate good academic achievements in their undergraduate studies or its equivalent from recognised institutions. One must have
graduated before 1999. * Have at least three years experience in community service or rural
based development related activities. * Demonstrate leadership skills and potential. * Pursue a post-graduate degree that will directly enhance their
leadership capacity in an academic, policy, practical, or artistic field corresponding to one or more of the Foundation's program areas++. * Present a plan specifying how they will apply their studies to social problems or issues in their own countries. * Be committed to working on these issues after the fellowship period.

Completed application forms, with all the supporting documents indicated in the checklist, should be returned to the undersigned by 25th April 2003. Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by panels, composed of women and men of integrity from various academic and professional fields, who will make the final selections. Please note the following instructions:

* Application forms received after the deadline will not be processed * Application forms without all the supporting documents will be disqualified * Incorrect information tendered will disqualify you, before, during
and after the award * IFP will conduct a random verification of facts on the form at any
stage of the application process * To qualify for the third round of the IFP Competition, all previous
unsuccessful applicants must reapply.
