University of Edinburgh: Scholarships for Southern African
Students, 06/06
Each year, the University of Edinburgh provides two academic
scholarships for students from Southern African countries to pursue
Masters or
doctoral studies in any subject. The University covers the overseas rates
fees
and University accommodation, but additional living expenses are not
presently met. The Southern African Scholarships Committee invites
applications from suitably qualified individuals by Friday 26 May 2006.
Applicants for doctoral funding should send a statement (around 3
pages) of their intended research, including a rationale for the project
and the intended methodology; a transcript of results obtained in a
relevant
first degree; and the names of two referees. The referees may send their
letters separately. Candidates for one-year Masters programmes should send
a
2 page statement outlining what they expect to gain from it and how it
will
enable them to make a future contribution at home. In addition, they
should
send a transcript and the names of 2 referees. The referees may send
their
letter separately. Applicants for both programmes are also advised to make
a
formal application to the Colleges for which they seek to gain admission.

The Committee itself has no say over which students are admitted to the
University: its remit is to offer scholarships to students who have
been/will be admitted by the respective Colleges. The letters from the
referees may, however, be copies of letters written for the University
admissions process.
Applications should be sent to the Southern African Scholarships
Committee, Centre of African Studies, University of Edinburgh, 21 George
Square, Edinburgh EH8 9LD, United Kingdom. They may also be faxed to
0044-131-6506535 or e-mailed to Paul.Nugent@ed.ac.uk with the subject
box marked "for attention Southern African Scholarships Committee".The
Committee aims to make its decisions in early June 2006 and notify the
applicants of the outcome with minimal delay.
