DU BOIS-MANDELA-RODNEY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
1998-99 Program Theme:
Health, Public Policy, and Communities
in the African Diaspora
The Du Bois-Mandela-Rodney Postdoctoral Fellowship Program of the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies (CAAS) at the University of Michigan was established to identify and support scholars of high ability engaged in postdoctoral work on the Afro-American, African, and Caribbean experiences of men and women of color. The program theme for 1998-99 is "Health, Public Policy and Communities in the African Diaspora." Historically the health needs of the black community have been ignored or considered marginal in the formation of public policies. This includes access to health care, environmental and zoning laws, the role of black subjects in medical research, and the relationship between genetics and specific health problems. Scholars are encouraged to examine the implications of these and similar concerns as they pertain particularly to race, gender, and class. The Center seeks applications from scholars in the social sciences and policy or health-related fields whose work addresses key health and policy issues facing black peoples in the African diaspora.
This is a *residential fellowship* for 1998-99 academic year, at a stipend of $30,000. The cost of health insurance and taxes are deducted from the stipend. Successful candidates can expect to maintain affiliations with CAAS as well as departments and research institutes that relate to their projects. Fellows will be expected to conduct a CAAS work-in-progress seminar on their research during one of the semesters in residence.
