Project Description

The Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center at Howard University will host an intensive two-week training program in gender studies, conflict management and peace advocacy ("waging peace") for fifteen selected women from Sub-Saharan Africa who are engaged in peace-making initiatives in their own countries. This program is funded by the United States Institute of Peace and Howard University. The proposed training project has the following components: orientation and background briefings; instruction on women, gender and globalization; instruction on politics, democratization, and advocacy; training in conflict management issues and techniques; training in "waging peace" (e.g., lobbying, fund-raising); Site visits to program-relevant Washington, D.C.-area locations; Interaction with Washington, D.C.-based organizations active in peace.

How to Apply

African women officials and members of nongovernmental organizations who are involved currently in peace-making initiatives and may be attending the United Nations Millennium Forum (May 22 - 26), but will not attend the formal UN meetings. English and French will be spoken, but printed training materials will be available only in English. Summarized interpretations of English language presentations may be expected. Deadline for applications: no later than May 5, 2000. Notification by May 10, 2000. Please fax or email the following information: (1) A curriculum vita --2 pages max. (2)Description of peace-building activities during the past 12-18 months--1 page. (3) A statement explaining what the applicant would like to gain from this training that she has not yet had an occasion to experience--1 page. (4) A brief letter of nomination from an NGO officer, or an elected or appointed official of municipal or national government administration, or an officer of the U.S. Embassy, Consulate, USIS, USAID, Peace Corps.

The Program will provide for the following: Travel expenses from New York City to Washington, D.C. and return. Lodging. Meals. Transportation within the U.S.. Emergency medical insurance. Stipend: $200. Program costs do not include roundtrip trans-Atlantic air travel.
