Call for Papers
Reporting Zimbabwe, Before and After 2000: African and Global Perspectives

9am-5pm Friday 25th February 2005 University of Westminster, 309 Regent Street Campus, W1 London, UK

From the February 2000 image of land invaders wearing grass hats, through pictures of palm-waving Zimbabwean opposition party supporters, to the 2004 stories about arrested mercenaries in handcuffs and the Straw - Mugabe handshake, Zimbabwe has been highlighted in African and global mass media. There has been a global interest in reporting Zimbabwean politics, especially during the elections held in 2000 and 2002. The news reports on Zimbabwe's political and economic problems have increased in number and length. Both African and global media seem to be devoting more space to the topic. At the same time, few topics have been as emotional and controversial as Zimbabwe. It is time to begin an academic debate not only about how, but also why, Zimbabwe has been constantly highlighted in the media in Africa and abroad.

The Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) Africa Series is organising a one-day conference to debate the topic of reporting Zimbabwe before and after 2000. The aim of the one-day conference is to involve journalists, researchers and academics in: A) Examining how Zimbabwe has been reported in Zimbabwean and African mass media

B) Assessing the coverage of Zimbabwe in the global mass media.

This interdisciplinary conference is the first of a series of CAMRI events that will investigate the role of media in processes of African democracy, development and globalisation.

The programme of the seminar will be as follows:

  1. Opening Session: Overview of Reporting Africa
  2. Panel 1: Zimbabwe in Zimbabwean Mass Media
  3. Panel 2: Zimbabwe in the African Mass Media
  4. Panel 3: Zimbabwe in the Global Mass Media.
  5. Closing Session: Implications, Lessons and Future

Papers are invited on how Zimbabwe has been portrayed in the mass media.
