Call for Papers: Perspectives on Yoruba History and Culture, 03/04

"PERSPECTIVES ON YORUBA HISTORY AND CULTURE" March 26-28, 2004 University of Texas at Austin www.utexas.edu/conferences/africa

We are pleased to announce a three-day conference centered on the Yoruba to review the state of knowledge, the various advances already made, the connections with comparative and diaspora history, the critique of old and new sources, and the identification of new areas worthy of investigation. We welcome papers that raise historical, cultural, methodological, and theoretical questions that address the strengths and voids by focusing on relevant issues and empty spaces in Yoruba history and culture.

This is intended as an all-embracing conference on the Yoruba, broadly defined in their geographic and cultural scope. Papers are welcomed on virtually all topics and themes, irrespective of time, period and space. Practitioners of religious traditions, cultural activists and scholars will exchange ideas and data over a three-day period.

The conference will encompass a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. Participants will be drawn from the United States, Canada, and elsewhere, including European and African countries. Graduate students are encouraged to attend and present papers. Selected papers from the conference will be published in book form.

The deadline for submitting paper proposals is October 1, 2003. Proposals should include a 250-word abstract along with the author's name, address, telephone, email, and institutional affiliation. Please address all inquiries and submissions via e-mail to Ms Ann Genova annabell@mail.utexas.edu
