"The Role of Technology for Improved Access to Public Health Care Programs Throughout Africa"

Conference Mission

The goal of the conference is to characterize how telecommunication resources, computer-based information systems and appropriate health information infrastructures can be utilized to advance the general health conditions of African society, through improvements to qual- ity, access and management of health systems on the continent.

We are looking forward to drawing upon the collected knowledge of in- ternational experts in the areas of health systems organization and management, information technology, clinical care, epidemiology, telemedicine, health promotion, and health services policy.

The conference invites participants to discuss current problems and trends in the utilization of computer-based telecommunications tech- nologies in the health sector.

Post-conference activities will focus on the establishment and devel- opment of a National Telemedicine Centre of Excellence in Uganda.

We believe that the breadth of expertise, which this conference will bring will enable us to provide to partners in Africa access to unique in-depth resources to support a comprehensive program for the implementation of social and economic services.

Presentation topics will include:

1. The Role of telecommunications in Health and Healthcare in Africa - Drawing examples from Canada and other countries.

2. An Open Discussion on Telecommunication resources, computer-based information systems and how an appropriate health information in- frastructure can be utilized to advance health in Africa in the 21st century.

3. Application and Infrastructure: Where and How to begin?

4. Discussion of implementation and technology appropriateness issues in Africa.

5. Discussion of knowledge content and management of Telemedicine Centres in Africa drawing examples in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

6. Discussion of the Proposed Uganda Telemedicine Centre of Excel- lence and its location in the country.

The Venue

The Ugandan conference will be held at the Hotel Equatoria http://www.uganda.co.ug/equato.htm

in the heart of Kampala. This hotel is situated near the university teaching hospital and other major hospitals in Kampala. The hotel of- fers a free airport transfer service to and from Entebbe Airport.
