CALL FOR PAPERS
Writing African Histories Conference, 9th June 2008
Department of History, University of Sheffield
Keynote: Professor Frederick Cooper (New York University)
Following successful events in 2006 and 2007, postgraduate
students in 'Imperial and International' history at the
University of Sheffield are holding their third annual
conference on the theme of 'Writing African Histories'.
Postgraduate researchers from across the arts, humanities
and social sciences are invited to present research papers
and work-in-progress. Papers on any aspect of colonial and
postcolonial African history will be considered. Embracing
this opportunity for postgraduate students to interact with
research of peers, we encourage papers to reflect, in their
course, on some of the issues and dilemmas of researching
and writing African histories. These themes might include,
amongst others:
- Practical experiences of conducting research in Africa
- Integrating global and local histories
- Writing social histories
- Colonial and Postcolonial representations of Africa
We would also welcome papers focusing on other parts of the
world that engage with the broad themes of writing about
colonial contexts.
Abstracts for papers of 15-20 minutes (maximum 250 words)
should be submitted to <laura.evans@sheffield.ac.uk>.
Deadline for abstracts: Monday 10th March 2008
Funds will be available to pay towards expenses incurred by
speakers (travel and accommodation).
