Call for Papers: Workshop in Health Research Ethics in Africa, 01/03

Call for Applications

Application deadline: 15 December 2002

Applications are invited from African physicians/scientists in the employment of African health research, control, and/or training in- stitutions. Applicants must at least be middle to senior level inves- tigators, key members of ethics (or scientific) review committees, study monitors, members of data safety monitoring boards, sponsors of research involving human subjects, members of regulatory bodies or editors of biomedical journals.

Workshop Contents 1. Introductions, Course Content and House-Keeping 2. History of Ethics in Health Research Ethics Codes and Guidelines 3. Ethics Review Boards/Committees 4. Beneficence/Mal-beneficence in Research 5. Respect of Subjects 6. Informed Consent in Research 7. Justice in Research 8. Issues in Study Design: Randomized Control Trials and Placebos, 9. Traditional Medicine and Standard Therapy 10. Ethics Issues in International Research 11. Community Benefits and Protections 12. Archived Specimens

The workshop will mainly utilize participatory approaches including lectures, case studies, discussion groups, panels, debates and other interactive teaching/learning methods.

Selected participants will be awarded scholarships by the African Ma- laria Network Trust (AMANET), which will cover costs for economy class airfares, tuition and full board. Participants should meet all their other costs.

Instructions will mainly be in English, although efforts are underway to include a bilingual English/ French facilitator.

post, and any other posts you may have held, and why you need this workshop; 6. Current research interests (not more than 10 lines; 7. A list of your scientific publications, especially those relating
to clinical/field trials and to the workshop; 8. Names and addresses of two referees (including their telephone, fax and e-mail contacts) who you have requested to provide letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the address below.
